Q.

1(a) In drawing 2 CD’s from a lot, defective and non defective CD’s , let A, B , C and D mean at least
one Defective CD, at least one non defective CD, 2 defective CD’s and 2 non defective CD’s,
respectively. Are A and B mutually exclusive? Are C and D mutually exclusive? Comment on
your results.

Answer:

A= at least one defected CD

B= at least one non defected CD

C= 2 defected CDs

D= 2 non defected CDs

As

S= {Def , NonDef }

 A and B are not mutually exclusive because (A intersection B) not equal to Null.
 Both A and B has common region.

C and D are mutually exclusive

As,

 (C intersection D)= Null

 C set has only the defected CDs and D set has only the non defected CDs

Q.1(b) If we inspect photocopy paper by randomly drawing 5 sheets without replacement from every
pack of 500, what is the probability of getting 5 clean sheets although 0.4% of the sheets contain
spots?

Answer:

0.4% outa 500 contains spots

Total no of sheets contain spots are= (0.4/100) * 500 = 2

Total no of sheets without spots are= 500-2 = 498

Total no of sheets drawn without replacement are= 5

So,
P (first sheet clean) = (498/500)

P (second sheet clean) = (497/499)

P (third sheet clean) = (496/498)

P (fourth sheet clean) = (495/497)

P (fifth sheet clean) = (494/496)

As these events are independent so we will multiply them all together.

P (all five sheets drawn clean) = (498/500) * (497/499) * (496/498) * (495/497) * (494/496)

P (all five sheets drawn clean) = (24453/24950)

P (all five sheets drawn clean) = 0.98008 Answer
