Home Activity:
This week in class we will focus on movement. The children will play and explore with friends at different activities that will encourage movement
using different muscles. Some of the activities include; building towers of three blocks or more and using fine motor skills to drive the plastic cars and wooden
trucks around the block area, using full body movement at the gross motor area to rock the rocking boat back and forth, using their legs to get around the
playground area in the Little Tike Cars and using shovels, buckets and watering cans to scoop the sand up. Teachers will encourage children to use both large
motor muscles and small motor muscles through modeling how to do each of the activities in each area. Teachers will involve all children in play, that way they
can interact positively with their peers.
At home, you can encourage your child to participate in movement by having them get on and off of objects or crawl in and out of objects. For example,
encourage them to use a common household item such as crawling up the stairs or make an obstacle course using pillows and blankets for them to crawl in
and out of. To go along with this handout, we’ve created a DIY scarf as an object for movement. You can encourage your toddler to move around the room,
while waving the scarf in the air. Add their favorite music and encourage them to dance around with it. Maybe have them wave it high and low or side to side.
As your children participate in different movement activities, they will be able to start using both large motor muscles and small motor muscles. They will also
be able to gain skill and coordination through active play that involves movement.
