Overview
Topic and Overarching Goal:
Music & Movement:
Going around the world game. Imagine you're going on a fantastic adventure around the world! We're going to
pretend that a magical rope is our pathway to explore different countries.

Children will practice their gross motor skills by balancing themselves stepping around a rope for at least 1 time.
While listening to music, once music stops they must freeze on place until they finish going around the rope.

Dramatic play (Gardening):

When gardening children will learn the process of planting a seed, eventually familiarize themselves with different
tools used that will allow children to express their creativity and imagination as they design their garden spaces,
arranging at least 1 plant developing a deeper connection to nature.

Preparing the Activity

Activity Description: What are you doing for your activity? Describe in very specific step-by-step detail,
using numbers or bullets. Write descriptions as if you will be giving instructions to a substitute teacher:

• For my music and movement activity I will be creating a balance game where children will be having to balance
themselves walking on top of a rope. The way that music will be incorporating in this activity is by playing the
music on the background while children are walking around the rope. Music will stop once stopping the music
children must freeze in place maintaining a position of balance where they will be practicing their gross motor
skills. To expand the learning we will also be adding pictures around the path of the world because if we are
traveling around the world we must take a look at some of the beauty that we have and must appreciate on Earth.
These types of pictures will be everything that we are grateful for mother nature such as different animals, plants,
forest, jungle, natural environments etc. When being frozen children will have the option to take a look at those
pictures and name what they are, having an understanding that in earth day we must celebrate nature and that
everything we are seeing in the pictures are part of earth.

• For my dramatic play activity I have decided to go for gardening where we will be role-playing as gardeners
since it is one of the best and most popular activities for earth day. Gardening it is an essential and beautiful skill
to have and what better way to introduce the concept and process of gardening than in play. We will be starting
with a set up that can grab children’s attention, we will be doing this by laying out all the materials that are
available for children to play, in a process that they recognize which ones are the tools from being separated and
which ones are the plants. In an area that is safe and accessible for children to move around freely. Having tools
being separated from the plants will be a great way for children to look and explore the different tools by
themselves where they can decide which ones would be better to use for them to plant their pretend seed.
Educator must participate in the play by doing a demonstration and self talk into the steps that you are doing in
order for children to have this as a guidance. We are first using pretend seeds and a small pot of soil, explaining
the steps “first I need to dig a small hole to place my seed, covering with soil I will be watering my seed to watch
it grow”. Educator must also encourage children to use their gardening tools and mimic the planting process they
observed using their imagination. Educator can encourage this by asking children what tools will they be using to
dig and plant their seed/flower? Giving them options and telling what the tools are for children will learn to
recognize them and learn about them and their function. We must remember that as educator we have the
opportunity to be children’s guide but it is also important to give them enough space for their creativity by
allowing children to express themselves and let them arrange the plants according to their preferences. Another
way that the educator can involve herself in the role play is by creating pretend scenarios where she water the
plants, remove weeds and even talk to the plants for them to grow faster and happier. We can also create different
scenarios where you as an educator are a busy gardener and or later pretend to be a curious scientist studying
plants, when being in this role a great conversation can emerge with children playing by asking them different
questions about their plants and how they got them to be that big. The pretend scientist will be a great role of the
educator to learn the thinking process of the children and how well they have they developed their gardening
skills.
