Dance 1100

February 16, 2019

Inside the Cages

Cages was presented by Body Logic Dance Company, on January 17 through

18, 2019 by a group of women named Karyn Andrasko, Lyndsi Henretty, Elizabeth

Jones, Eiby Lobos, and Chelacie Yeoman. The style they performed was Modern

Dance, and this was performed at Rose Wegner Performing Arts Center, which is

located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

What this Formal Analysis will be talking about is about my first performance

experience, where I will be describing two of the dances and movements, they used in

this Dance, what feelings they showed through the dance and music, and how they

made me and the audience feel. I’m also describing what type of music they use on this

style of dance, and what it tries to transmit. What kind of clothing and hairstyle they use

on this style of dance to make their performance and be able to move comfortably.

The performance was meaningful; their name Cages represented the animals

that are still living in the shelters and the animals that are rescued every day. This gave

a lot of meaning to the performance. All the dancers had a big heart for dedicating their

hard work and donating a part of their gains to the animal shelter so that they could

keep helping more abandoned animals. That way the animals wouldn’t lose hope on

getting a new home and a new life with a new family.

The first dance that was performed was after watching a video of the animal

shelter explaining and showing in the circumstances of how they live, and how much
their lives change after getting adopted. They made sure to show us how after getting

adopted the animals get healthier and a lot happier. It is like getting another chance in

life.

Barriers was the name of the first dance and it was choreographed by Chelacie

Yeoman, who was also one of the dancers. This dance was meant to show you how

animals feel everyday inside of those cages by dancing. They also showed us by their

moves how animals in the shelter acted when things got complicated. They showed

feelings of relief, being anxious, happiness but it wouldn’t last long because right after

they would feel like they are in trouble or something comes and haunts them, making

their happiness go away.

The genre and type of music they used for all the performances is contemporary

music, which is used in modern dance, jazz, and classical ballet. The song they used for

the first performance is named “CAN’T” to show feelings as sadness, stress, because of

being around barriers, happiness and anxiety, and a feeling of success at the end. And

the dancers of the first performance were Karyn Andrasko, Lyndsi Henretty, Elizabeth

Jones, and Eiby Lobos.

The second act of the performance that I will be talking about was so inspiring

and it made me feel like there’s hope after everything. There’s good news after bad

news and a rainbow after a horrible storm. That’s what the dance meant for me. The

second piece that I’m talking about is the last one the dancers performed, where they

resolve everything, all the problems and struggles they had; that is what they

transmitted through the dance they had.

The name of the last performance was “Without, within” and it was performed by

Karyn Andrasko, Serena Webb, and Chelacie Yeoman, choreographed by Janalyn

Memmott which was one of the guests of the event to help with the dance. They also

had a phrase when they ended the performance which is “We stand beside, We stand

apart, We struggle alone, But together one heart”. I interpret this as a group of people or

animals, that are always together, no matter if they are far apart they can and will

always count on themselves.

“Without, Within” consisted of being happy after being held in a cage and with the

probability of never getting a chance of getting out of there adopted. They represented

the puppies and all the animals that were adopted given another opportunity of life,

getting a new family to live with and who will take care and protect. That’s when all the

storm started to fade away of the dance, and they all came together to celebrate that

the nightmare was gone because they will always support each other no matter what

the situation is.

The purpose of this performance was to help animals get adopted and make

people became conscious of what is happening to animals: how bad they are being

treated and how this can be prevented by getting them a new family. We can change

their lives. The first dance was about how animals live in their cages stressed about

never getting the opportunity of getting out, but at the end on the last dance the

nightmare ends by getting adopted, and finding happiness with a new family and a new

lesson is learned, and is that everything is always going to get better, and everyone in

the cage is a family that even if they are far away from each other they will always be

together as heart.
PERSONAL REFLECTION:

-What have you learned about yourself from participating in this dance class?

I learned so much about myself when taking Ballet, I didn’t know or think that was possible

how much my flexivity could improve in such a little time by just taking this class. I have never

taken a dance class before so I didn’t know what to expect, I was worried I wouldn’t make it

because of how much work you need to put and also getting sick all the time is hard to be an

active person.

But after taking this class it has taught me that it is possible to try new things and

come out successful, and Ballet is something that has interested me since elementary,

because I would see movies and performances, and the nutcracker was my favorite

movie from back then when I was a little girl and that was what got my interested I even

had my own tutu and ballet shoes, and would practice by myself the jumps that I saw on

the movies.

And to have an opportunity like this to be able to practice and actually learn ballet

now that i’m in college it seems like a dream come true, to practice and learn something

that I didn’t think I would be able to. So I do continue on taking more ballet classes to

see where I can end up and I will continue being active so that when I come back I will

still know everything that I have learned from practice.

-What did you learn about the communicative potential (feeling or meaning) of

dance by viewing a live performance?

Now after practicing ballet and going to see a live performance I can appreciate a lot more

the work that ballerinas and dancers are doing, they make everything look so easy, but after

trying to learn to dance like them I can tell how much effort they put into every step.it was really

difficult to me to memorize steps and make them to look perfect and perform them, and to be

able to do that you need balance, but not everyone has balance to be a able to improve

in your balance you should develop your muscles.
