What should I know before coming to Japan?

Jessie is going on holiday to Tokyo and she wants to reduce the chances of making bad decisions in her
cross-cultural interactions.

Ethan: Hello Jessie. It’s good to see you before you leave.
Jessie: Thank you for meeting me, Ethan. The plane leaves at 10.00 p.m. I’m so nervous.
Ethan: Just take it easy and enjoy yourself. Everything is going to be just fine. When I first went to Japan from
the USA there were so many things that I didn’t know or understand. I was really nervous myself, too.
Jessie: I know, that’s why I wanted you to share with me some of the must know Japan travel tips no one talks
about.
Ethan: Well, the first thing that might be of your interest is that a lot of places there in Japan won’t accept
credit cards. People from a lot of modern countries visit Tokyo each year, and although you might think Japan
is a modern country itself, the reality is that a lot of people still carry around cash. Strange, eh?
Jessie: Yes indeed. I’ll therefore carry five or six hundred dollars in my pocket today in case I might use cash.
How about eating and drinking in the street? I don’t want to waste time and money in restaurants all the time.
Ethan: Well, although you might find some good food trucks in the streets, you should know that it’s
considered bad manners, in many respects, to walk and eat at the same time, even if you get food on the go,
like sandwiches or drinks. This could sound weird to you, but for Japanese people, eating a sandwich is the
same as eating a bowl of rice while walking. If you want to eat in public the best thing you should do is to stop
and sit on a side of the street.
Jessie: Fine, I’ll keep that in mind. There is one thing I feel most concerned about and it is Wi-Fi and Internet
connection. Will I access Internet easily?
Ethan: Although there are a variety of ways to stay connected to the Internet while traveling in Japan, you
must know that this is a quick evolving industry where services and rates are constantly changing. You’ll find it
in many restaurants and cafes. In fact, Starbucks provide Wi-Fi to all its customers; however, I’m afraid you
must register in advance
Jessie: All right, that’s good to know. Last question, what’s it like to get around in Japan? Is it really that bad to
ride trains? How can I avoid crowded trains?
Ethan: I guess you’ve seen videos on Japan with crazy attendance pushing people on the train. Right? Well,
let me tell you that the struggle is real and it does happen, especially during rush hour. You should then try to
avoid riding major city combine trains during the weekdays between 8.00 to 9.30 in the morning and 5.00 to
7.30 in the evenings. What a lot of travelers don’t know is that usually the first or last car of the train on
weekday mornings is reserved for women.
Women-only cars have existed for more than 50 years as a way of keeping female students safe from the
advantages of lecherous men during the peak hours.
Jessie: Thank you so much Ethan. You’ve been really helpful!
Ethan: You’re welcome. And don’t worry so much! All travelers to Japan are always able to overcome the
language barriers and make themselves understood.
