What thanks and praise to Thee we owe, The witness of the Savior’s life,
O priest and sacrifice divine, The great apostle’s chosen friend
For Thy dear saint through whom we know Through weary years of toil and strife
So many a gracious word of Thine; And still found faithful to the end.

O happy saint! whose sacred page, So grant us, Lord, like him to live,
So rich in words of truth and love, Beloved by man, approved by Thee,
Pours on the Church from age to age Till Thou at last the summons give,
This healing unction from above; And we, with him, Thy face shall see.
