What is your Area of Interest?

The area of interest I chose was food insecurity with children, focusing on classroom
instruction and what to be aware of.

Description of the Area of Interest

The reason I chose this topic was because even though America is considered a
first world country we still have thousands of children starving everyday. According to
research done by Feeding America the number of those considered food insecure in
America was 14.3 million households, not even individuals (Feeding America, 2020).
With COVID the number is expected to rise to over 50 million households with over 17
million children being affected (Feeding America, 2020). Feeding America also states
that many of these families don’t qualify for government assistance programs related to
food insecurity. Not only does going hungry affect these childrens’ quality of life it also
can cause developmental delays or an increase in emotional or behavioral problems
(Feeding America, 2020).

Target Audience

The target audience would be for teachers, afterschool programs, and other
similar programs so that the caregivers for children would know the signs of food
insecurity, how it affects the children, and resources available to families struggling with
food insecurity besides government assistance programs that aren’t open to all.

Projected Outcome and Benefit

The outcome would be that more teachers and caregivers are aware of what to
look for with food insecurity, especially now with the pandemic, so that the children have
another adult to make sure they are getting the food they need to develop properly. It
would also make them aware of resources that are available and how to have the
conversation with the families.
