MAMA NOTES THAT SHE REMEMBERS PEOPLE

TALKING ABOUT HER WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL:
“…YOU AIMS TO HIGH ALL THE TIME. YOU NEEDS TO
SLOW DOWN AND SEE LIFE A LITTLE MORE LIKE IT IS.
JUST SLOW DOWN SOME…”
WHY DO YOU THINK SHE IS NOW REMINDED OF THIS?
DO YOU THINK THIS IS AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
TO SOMEONE’S DREAMS? WHY OR WHY NOT?

This words from mama show that, since young, she was somewhat of a dreamer, someone that
aspired for more, that dared to have dreams and hopes and wanted someday to be more, to have
a better life for both her and her family. Obviously being a black woman in that era of the United
States history was not something easy at all, because racism, segregation and many other issues
still plagued the country, and even though we can see that those issues are still present in today’s
society, in those years, it was far worse.

I do not think that it was an appropriate response to someone’s dreams, even though I can see
where her head was at that point. It must be very difficult to live that particular situation, where
you have to see your life’s work going down the drain because of a mistake, and, worse than that,
it was a mistake that she didn’t even make herself but her son, which must be even harder to
understand and accept. When we have dreams, it’s normal to find ourselves in situations that may
seem hopeless and the impotence of being unable to do something about it would drive anyone
crazy if enough pressure was onto us. But that being said, there’s always a ray of hope, a silver
lining if you will, that we must try our hardest to find and to cling onto, because when we let our
dreams die is when we die inside ourselves as well.

We, as humans, work and function motivated by two main things: desires and dreams, and if we
allow ourselves to forget about them, we lose the drive that makes us do everything we do on a
daily basis, and we eventually become empty shells of our former selves, and this, we cannot do,
no matter what.
