Introduction
My name is Sammar Abbas and I have done my graduation from Pakistan. I completed my
Bachelor’s degree from Pakistan and went to Australia for higher education. I tool admission
in the Masters, that would help me to build up my leadership and management skills. I was
also doing a part time job that allowed me to experience a proper working environment in an
organization. My career dreams are to become a manager or leader on the top position in a
multinational organization. I want to be included in the board of directors. My aim is to
become the executive level manager who are not only involved in the day to day transactions
but they are actually involved in the strategy formulation for the organization. The executive
managers basically take important decisions for the organization’s future based on the current
and past performance of the organization. My goals and ambitions require me to have a clear
understanding about my strengths and weaknesses about my leadership skills. I have taken
various self assessment tests which allows me to have a clear understanding about myself.
Creativity test
Another important test that enables a person to get a better understanding of his personality is
the creativity test. This test allows the person to know that how much creative the person is,
and also let him know about his weaknesses on which he can work on. Being a manager or a
leader, the creativity is an important skill that is used for making important decisions and in
problem solving. I took the creativity test online and got the scores of the test in which I
found out that I scored 51 in creativity. This is a medium score as the test results are usually
divided into three categories which are 16-36, 37-58 and 59-80.
My test results show that my creativity is a work in progress and requires a lot of work. The
scores are not too bad but sometimes I am able to take good decisions due to my creativity.
However, I still need to work on polishing my strengths. There are some ways in which the
ability of creativity can be boosted which includes the various steps like preparation,
incubation, insight, evaluation and elaboration. These are the five steps that provides a
practical way to improve the creativity of an individual.
The detail understanding of my test results can be found by checking these scores of test in
various areas of creativity. There were various questions about the different creativity
elements in the test that were used to assess my own ability. These includes the first one
which is finding problems, it is highly important and I scored 16 out of 25 in that. Similarly, I
scored 5 out of 10 in gathering and reflecting the information. However, in problem
exploration in scored 12 out of 15, whereas in the generation and evaluation of the ideas I got
10 out of 15. While, in the implementation I got 8 out of 15 scores.
In my opinion, I sometimes find myself to be more creative than the scores of the test but in
some situations I am not able to make good decisions due to the lack of sufficient creativity
and due to which I take the help of others who are working with me in the organization.
There are nine different roles that are played by the persons when working together in a team.
Belbin’s team roles assessment allows a person to figure out the most dominant part in his or
her personality. The model helps in understanding the team roles that are played by the
person when working in a team. The nine roles that are used in the Belbin’s team model
includes the executive, explorer, innovator, analyst, driver, chairperson, completer, team
player and expert.
There are total 100 points that are distributed among the various roles and the role with the
highest points is basically the dominant role in the personality of an individual. The test
results of the test that I took online are shown in the Appendix which are shown in the form
of a pie chart. The different pieces of the circle show different roles in the personality of the
individual (Abdulrahman, 2017).
When I conducted the test, I found that the most dominant role in my personality is the role
of an executive. An executive is also called as an organizer. An executive usually tries to get
the work done in the company. He is usually efficient and practical person who has a better
personality. These people are organized and turn the ideas into reality by working hard in the
team. When the points were divided I got 23% in the role of executive. This test was useful
for me to understand my team behavior when I am working with my other team members in
an organization. This would also allow me to improve my skills in which I am lacking control
(Abdulrahman, 2017).
The conflict management styles allow a person to understand the way he or she try to manage
the conflict or arguments that may occur among the team members. When the team members
are working together, they may have different ideas and opinions and they may not like the
ideas of each other which results in them having different perspective with each other. The
conflict management test, I conducted online in order to assess my skills in the management
of a conflict if it occur among any of the team members. This test presents five different
styles which are used for assessing the conflict management of the individuals who are taking
the test (Rubin, 2018).
I took the test and I scored the highest in the style IV. I scored 7 in the style 7 which shows
the most dominant type of style in my personality. This shows that this is the conflict
management style that I most often use in my personality. The style IV indicates that I
equally give value to the interpersonal relationships and my goals in the life. The style shows
that compromise is the most useful thing which can be used in resolving a workplace conflict.
Although I am not best in this skill but it is still better than nothing (Sitanggang, 2018).
However, I also scored 6 in both style III and style V which indicates that I have good
relationship management skills and I early find conflict but if I do, I try to resolve it as early
as I can. I try to prevent the conflict from occurring on the first place. My strategy is honesty
and openness. I try to bring a common solution for both parties who are involved in the
conflict or the ones who are part of the conflict situation. I give a solution to both parties
which does not limit the rights of any one of the parties who are part of the conflict.
Self assessment related to organizational processes
Organizational culture
Organizational culture is the working environment of the organization in which the people
are working together in a team working towards a common goal. I used the OCAI
(Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument) online to assess type of organizational
culture that is being followed in the organization in which I am working. This instruments
shows four different types of cultures which are Adhocracy culture, Clan culture, Hierarchy
culture and Compete culture. I took the test online and in the test there are various questions
for which I have to distribute the 100 percent in various different options that are given. After
taking the test, I figured out that my cultural profile is basically a mixture of the of all these
cultures that are mentioned in the test (Aziz, 2018).
The first type of culture is the Adhocracy culture in which there is a creative and dynamic
working environment in which the people are working together. The leaders are seen as the
innovators and risk takers. In this type of culture, the innovation skills are given preference.
The second type of culture is the Clan culture. This culture has the friendly working
atmosphere for the people. There is a lot of common things among the people and they all
work together as a family. They have goals in the long term for the development of their
human resources. Next type of culture is the control culture in which there is a formal and
structured workplace. The leaders focus on the coordination and organization. They also have
specific policies and procedures which they have to keep in their mind at the time of
performing within an organization. The last type of culture is the market culture. This is also
called market culture or compete culture. In this type of organizational culture, there are
results based working place which emphasize on the competitive workplace for the people
(Barcelo, 2017).
The test results of the OCAI online are shown in the Appendix which shows the current as
well as the preferred scores in the various organizational cultures. The test results are
basically a reflection of my own personality. I have a mixture of cultural profile which I
exhibit when working in my organization (Chandler, 2017).
Conclusion
The above discussion indicates the tests that I conducted in order to assess my leadership
skills. There are various assessment tools available for the self assessment of an individual’s
personality. However, I personally choose these above mentioned test because they are
available online and can be taken very easily online. Also their test results can be found very
easily on the internet right after the completion of the test. These self assessment test have
made be to get an understanding about my own personality and get an insight onto my
strengths and weaknesses. The understanding about my strengths and weaknesses allows me
to polish my own strengths and also overcome the weaknesses.
There are various important measures and procedures that can be used for overcoming the
weaknesses and to polish my strengths. The test I took for the self assessment were related to
my individual behavior of working in the organization as well as the team processes and
organizational processes. These tests allow me to understand the way I work individually as
well as I work in the team. It also allows me to understand my conflict management skills if
any conflict arises within the organization. Moreover, the above mentioned tests were quite
helpful for me to improve my leadership skills. The leadership skills are highly important for
a leader or a manager to control their team. A leader must be able to control his feelings and
emotions and should also be able to influence the emotions of his team members. A manager
has to keep an eye on the performance of all his team members. My career dreams are to
become an executive level manager who are involved in the strategy formulation and taking
the long term decisions for the organization.
