COD

The analysis of COD level is determine using COD Digestion Reactor and
Spectrophotometer. Firstly, 100ml of sample is homogenize using blander for 30seconds and
preheat COD reactor to 150℃. Take 2 vial, first vial fills up 2.00mL of sample, and second
vial fill up 2.00mL of de-ionized water as blank. Place both vial into the reactor for 2 hours.
After 2 hours, let the reactor temperature cool down until reach temperature 120℃ before
place sample into a rack at room temperature. Test the sample using spectrophotometer with
programs 430 COD LR and 435 COD HR. Ensure use the de-ionized water as Zero before
read the sample for each programs.
TSS
TSS level is determine using filtration concept. Start with drying the filter disk using oven at
103℃ to 105℃ for 1 hour and weigh it. Assemble the filtering apparatus and filter and begin
suction. Seat the filter by applying small volume of distilled water. Take 50mL water sample
and pour onto center of the filter disk. Wash filter 3 times with 10mL of distilled water and
let the suction continue for 3 minutes. After filtration complete, remove the filter and transfer
to aluminum weighing dish and dry in an oven for 1 hour at 103℃ to 105℃. Lastly, cool the
filter at room temperature and weigh. Repeat the cycle until the weight is constant.
Oil and grease
Collect 350mL sample into 500mL separatory funnel. Add 4mL 1:1 hydrochloric acid
solution to the separatory funnel and mix well. Add 20mL of n-hexane to the same separatory
funnel. Put the stopper and invert the separatory funnel to release gases. Then shake
vigorously the separatory funnel for 2 minutes. Next, put it onto a stand for minimum 10
minutes or until two separation layers occur. Slowly drain the lower layer from the separatory
funnel into 500mL volumetric flask. Set up the filtering funnel. Put the glass funnel in the
neck of the distillation flask and folded 12.5 cm filter paper in the funnel. Add 10 g of
anhydrous sodium sulfate to the filter paper then Rinse the sodium sulfate with a small
amount of n-hexane. Discard the n-hexane correctly. Drip-drain the solvent layer into the pre-
weighed boiling flask through a funnel that contains filter paper and 10-g anhydrous sodium
sulfate. Carefully stir the sodium sulfate with a glass rod while the solvent layer drains.
Return the water layer to the separatory funnel. Use the same glass funnel for the second and
third extraction. Rinse the separatory funnel with three different 5-mL aliquots of fresh n-
hexane to remove oil film that stayed on the funnel walls. Drain each aliquot through the
funnel that contains the sodium sulfate into the distillation flask. Rinse the tip of the glass
funnel with 5 mL of n-hexane while removing it from the distillation flask. Examine the
distillation flask for sodium sulfate contamination. Sodium sulfate contamination will show
as cubic crystals at the bottom of the distillation flask.
