In Brindis Speech, Rizal addressed the reason why they are gathered that is to signify the
achievements of Luna and Hidalgo in their paintings, whereas in this Obra, Rizal made its way to
portray the painting based on what is happening in the Philippines during that time. Using
figurative and metaphorical words, he dauntlessly exclaims his insights in Spain government.
How Spain where starting to bring darkness in the life of Filipinos and how cruelty and
sufferings felt by those people who have no power. This made it more controversial when Rizal
started to speak about the Spolarium painting, which he said, “Through that canvas which is not
mute, one hears the noise of the crowd, the shouts of the slaves, the metallic clanking of the dead
bodies' armor, the sobbing of orphans, the murmured prayers, with as much vigor and realism
as one hears the deafening noise of thunder amid the crashing sound of a waterfall or the
awesome, terrifying shaking of an earthquake.  The same nature that births such phenomena also
intervenes in those brushstrokes. In contrast, in Hidalgo's painting, beats the purest sentiment,
the ideal expression of mournfulness, beauty and vulnerability, the victims of brute force, and it
is because Hidalgo was born beneath the brilliant azure of that sky, the lullaby of its sea
breezes, amid the serenity of its lakes, the poetry of its valleys and the majestic harmony of its
hills and mountains.” Rizal explained what the painting signifies and the meaning behind it. For
him, that canvas in non-mute because by just looking it you can feel and hear the sufferings of
those people who were drawn on the painting. We all know that during the colonization of
Spaniards, Filipinos was being abused by those friars, civil guards and experienced being slave
by the Spanish government. Many Filipinos were afraid to fight back because they have no
power compare to the Spaniards. That’s why Rizal did not use vulgar words instead he made his
own way to deliver his perspectives. And yes, this speech serves as his weapon to declare his
arguments and sentiments in the government and Filipinos.
