A Movie Review

One of my favorite movies is La Vita è Bella, a 1997 Oscar-winning drama, comedy

and romance movie directed by Roberto Benigni. It is an Italian movie starring the director

himself, Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, and Giorgio Cantarini.

The movie is about a Jewish-Italian man called Guido Orefice, portrayed by Roberto

Benigni, in Italy during the Second Great War. Falling in love with a beautiful teacher, Dora,

Guido  wins her, who would become his wife, over with his charm and humor. Having a son

whose name is Giosue during such time, Guido and his are separated from Dora and taken

to a concentration camp due to their Jewish origin. Determined to protect his son from the

danger of their surroundings, he invents stories to convince Giosue that their time in the

camp is a game whose ultimate prize is a real tank.

The chemistry of the three main characters is outstanding, two of whom (Roberto and

Nicoletta) are actually married to each other! Moreover, the way the movie depicts the heavy

atmosphere in the camp is so pure. The filmmakers supply us with many clues that are

directly relevant to the bloody war. Therefore, it surely deserves to be used as a

documentary to some degree. Last but not least, I truly adore the ending scene, involving a

Sherman tank from the Allied heading to the camp. The moment the American soldier starts

to say hi to Giosue in English, who is thinking the tank is eventually his at that moment,

sends shivers down my spine as I know the war is finally over!

The film won 3 Oscar awards, two of which were Best Foreign Language Film and

Best Actor for Roberto Banigni. Considering its commercial success, La Vita è Bella was

enormously successful, making $48.7 million in Italy. To conclude, this is a great movie to

watch, especially with your loved ones!
