ATC COM – Concept

Aircraft Communication and AIRBUS solution

Addressing Reporting System
FANS A+
ACARS Initially used for airline communication – AOC DCL & OCL & D-ATIS
(Airline Operations Control) services
Used (but not designed) for CPDLC and ADS-C
since 1995 on Oceanic and remote airspaces
Aeronautical Telecommunication Network AIRBUS solution

Designed for CPDLC (performances & FANS B+

ATN reliability)
1st implementation: Maastricht UAC in 2000
Continental airspaces with high density of
traffic
FANS A+ = Upgrade of FANS A FANS B+ = Upgrade of FANS B

ATC COM – Concept – FANS A+

• FANS A+
• Provides ATC datalink capabilities for oceanic/remote en-route operations via
the following applications
• AFN (ATS Facilities Notification): enables an ATC centre to get required
airborne data to perform any subsequent CPDLC/ADS-C exchanges
• ADS-C (Automatic Dependant Surveillance – Contract): provides an ATS
system with information on the present position of the aircraft and other
surveillance data
• CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication): provides direct
pilot/controller communication (e.g. clearances exchanges) using data-link
instead of voice ATC communication

 Certified on A320F, A330, A340 & A380

ATC COM – Concept – ATS 623

• ATS 623
• Provides the following services
• OCL (Oceanic CLearance): provides capability to negotiate Oceanic
clearances with ATC by datalink
• DCL (Departure CLearance): provides capability to negotiate Departure
clearances with ATC by datalink
• D-ATIS (Datalink-Automatic Terminal Information Service): supplements the
existing availability of ATIS as a voice broadcast service provided at
aerodromes world-wide

 Certified on A320F, A330, A340 & A380

ATC COM – Concept – FANS B+

• FANS B+
• Provides ATC datalink capabilities for Continental (high density traffic) en-route
operations via the following applications
• CM (Context Management): enables an ATC centre to get required airborne
data to perform any subsequent CPDLC exchanges
• CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication): provides direct
pilot/controller communication using data-link instead of voice ATC
communication

 Certified on A320F, A330 & A340

ATC COM – A350XWB function

• The A350XWB FANS function definition is integrated within the flight

deck as a single unified crew interface

• The flight crew will operate the FANS function without knowledge of the
underlying technology used for air-ground communications

• The A350 XWB ATC COM function will provide all services (FANS A+,
OCL, DCL, D-ATIS, ATS 623, FANS B+) with the following main onboard
novelties
• Capability to load VHF, HF voice frequencies and SATCOM numbers received
by CPDLC directly in the RMP
• Capability to load the FANS A & FANS B CPDLC route messages in the
secondary F-PLN (FMS)
