Symposium about Self-medication

Gathering of the people of Barangay Talandang by distributing brochures which

contains our project title and further details about the symposium around the community
during implementation day will be done. The materials will be given to all the
participants living in Brgy. Talandang, Tugbok District, Davao City especially the
residents of Purok Lanzones, Tisa and Santol. After gathering the participants, a
symposium about self-medication will follow.
A Public Health Worker from the Department of Health will be invited as a
speaker to conduct a 45-minute talk for the symposium on self-medication where he/she
will define the problem, enumerate causes and effects, how to solve the problem, and
relate it in the community. There will be a deliberation of tasks and each student will be
assigned to specific committees.
Before the 45-minute talk of the invited speaker, the assigned student nurse will
introduce the concepts of self-medication, over-the-counter drugs, and antibiotic
misuse. After the introduction of these concepts, the speaker will start talking about
medicines that are allowed for self-medication also known as over-the-counter drugs.
Definition of OTC drugs, list of common OTC drugs and indications will be tackled. Next
is the danger of self-medication. He/she will be talking about the complications and
effects that will occur if a person will always tolerate antibiotic misuse.
After the symposium, token will be given to the invited speaker as a sign of
gratitude for cooperating with the student nurses. Token will also be given to the
participants who attended the symposium.
General Objectives:

At the end of the half day event, the residents of Purok Tisa, Santol and Lanzones of
Barangay Talandang will be able to acquire knowledge and skills in order to be
equipped to address the identified problems which impose risk to their health and may
affect their daily living.

Specifically;

1. Formulate a project title and make an advertisement poster to attract the people
for them to attend the symposium;
2. Identify the problem which affected a large population of the community;
3. Understand the importance of the prevention of the identified problems;
4. Describe the definition of self-medication;
5. Identify the medicines allowed for self-medication; and,
6. Identify the dangers and complications of antibiotic misuse.
