Surface preparation
Remove any din, oll, grease, rust by suitable
methods. Remove any metal burrs or weld spatter
The minimum requirement for surface preparation
of pipe/steel surface is by mechanical/power wire
brushing to remove any rust scales. Grit blasting
can also be done in heavily contaminated areas.
Priming
BrrurAPE Priver* (Solvent based bitumen primer)
shall be used for priming the steel surface prior to
the application of the wrapping tape. Stir the
contents of the primer for 1-2 minutes to remove
ony sediment. Apply the primer with o brush or
roller evenly 10 ensure complete sealing of all
small undulations ond imperfections, porticularly
coround weld beots. Reseal the containers when not
in use.
Weappin.
Application instructions are for guideline only and
core subjecied to alterations for specific project
requirements, Wrapping should not commence
uniil the primed surface hos become touch dry
Apply strips of tape 100mm wide along the weld
beads and press firmly. Peel back 150 to 300 mm.
of the release film and apply the tape, adhesive
side, to the pipe. The angle of the tape must be
such os to produce the specified overlap. Apply
only sufficient tension 10 ensure good
conformation avoiding air pockets and bridging
Ensure end lap area of at least 150 mm when
splicing the tapes. Backfill with care. Use of on
Brusrick R protection membrane is recommended
to prevent any damage from backliling. Avoid use
of rocky or agglomerated backiil
Surface preparation, priming or wrapping should
not take place when the substrate is wet. Do not
carry ou! work when the surface temperature is less
than 5°C. All sources of ignition must be
exfinguished or removed before carrying out
priming operation. Adequate ventilation must also
be ensured. Store the tapes at temperatures not
exceeding 30°C and avoid excessive load
stacking. During the wrapping application it is
important to maintain an even tension whilst
controlling the overlap to prevent air entrapment,
which could lead to corrosion at a later stage. The
tapes are best applied by machine, either hand
powered for small runs or mechanically propelled
for longer runs. BUTE 165 PVC range of topes
is normally supplied in 10 m lengths. For machine
wrapping these lengths ore increased to suit the
project and reduce the number of roll changes.
STORAGE & SHELF LIFE
Brute 165 PVC rolls should be stored under
cover, out of direct sunlight ond protect from
extreme temperatures. Storage area should be
cool, dry, well — ventilated and regularly monitored
for temperature and major sources of heat, Shelf
life is up to 12 month when stored as per
recommended storage conditions
HEALTH & SAFETY
‘As with all bitumen products caution should olvays
be exercised. Protective clothing such as gloves and
goggles should be worm. Treat any splashes to the
skin or eyes with fresh water immediately. Should any
of the product be accidentally swallowed, do not
induce vomiting, but call for medical assistance
immediately.

APPLICATION
1. General
Surface shall be cleaned using propelled abrasive to remove all rust, mill scale, weld spatter, dirt, dust, grease and
other loose or deleterious matter to provide a surface finish equivalent to SA 21/2, SIS 05 5900.
Where applicable, factory-coating ends shall be wire-brushed for a minimum distance of 150mm and solar
protective coating shall be removed. Coating ends shall be beveled using a hot knife or similar approved process.
Primer shall be applied immediately following completion of surface preparation in accordance with AWA C209 ~ 76
section 3.3 and the manufactures recommendation.
All surfaces to be wrapped shall be primed and allowed to dry.
Primer application shall be limited to the area that can be wrapped during the working day, after which repriming or
stripping and repriming shall be required.
‘Tape shall be applied in a spiral fashion by hand or hand operated machines to provide a 55% overlap (or as
specified) and with sufficient tension to give constant adherence without voids or wrinkles,
Interleaving shall be removed and discarded as wrapping proceeds.
‘The tape wrapping shall commence and finish to give a minimum of 150mm overlap to factory applied coating. On
completion of the wrap, the surface of the tape shall be smoothened gloves hands to ensure completely sealed
overlap and absence of air pockets under the tape.
2, BURIED VALVES AND FITTINGS, etc
Buried valves and fitting etc shall be coated and protected to achieve the same standard of protection as to the
pipe. After surface preparation and priming, all protrusion and indentation shall be fully profiled with the Bitutape
Moulding paste / Mastic to a smooth continuous shape before tape wrapping. Valves shall be wrapped up to stem
level.
‘Wrapping of irregular shapes shall be to the approval of the Engineer.
3. CABLE / PIPE CONNECTIONS
Welded stud and soldered cable / pipe connection shall be coated to the same standards as the pipe to which it is
attached. After completion of cable connection, the cable tail shall be secured to the pipe with a lap of tape. The
cable connection shall be cleaned, primed and profiled with mastic before tape wrapping. Cleaning and priming
shall be as detailed above. The tape wrap shall have a minimum of three and a half circumferential overlap.
4. BONDING / OVERLAP OF BACKING
Where required the tape shall be capable of being cigarette wrapped around the pipe and with the adhesive
removed, the PVC backing shall be bonded over its full overlap to PVC layer beneath with suitable PVC adhesive
INSPECTION
Inspection of coated pipe joints, fitting etc. shall be visual for satisfactory adhesion and 100% holiday inspection by
a holiday detector set at the working voltage
The applied tape shall be inspected to confirm that effective bond of formed between the pipe surfaces and the
tape. This inspection shall be carried out not less than 24 hours after application. The working voltage shall be set
at least twice per working day.
3 ogi ‘completion of works may be required by certain project specification.POINT TO NOTE
Wrapping by hand or machine must be undertaken by experienced personnel under proper supervision.
Unsatisfactory workmanship shall be rejected especially where overlaps are not consistent and where
rocking is evident.
» Rucking, especially at in-situ joints are to be avoided. Awkward and abrupt changes in shape shall be
Subject of special attention and care during wrapping, ensuring elimination of entry paths for ground salts.
> Handling after wrapping must not allow any slings etc. to bear on wrapped areas. Write or rope slings shall
not be used.
» Wrapped pipes must be supported on unwrapped ends of pipe and not laid on the ground except as
necessary in the trench for final laying.
Wrapped pipes shall be protected from direct sunlight at all times,
.
