Preview: This Grade 5 Math Lesson follows NCTM guidelines and is

presented at two different levels of differentiation- Above Level and

On Level. The first Above level one provides students with a rubric
and directions to create a graph using the data table. The second On
level one provides further specific directions and scaffolding for
students who work better with some form of structured directions.

Lesson Objective: Using guided inquiry, students will be able to

interpret data and graph points on the coordinate plane to solve
real world mathematical problems.
State curriculum standards: Florida Standards
MAFS.5.G.1 Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-
world and mathematical problems.
MAFS.5.G.1.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes,
to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the
origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given
point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers,
called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates
how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the
second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the
second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and
the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x- coordinate, y-axis
and y-coordinate)
MAFS.5.MD.2.2 Make a line plot to display a data set of
measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8 ). Use operations
on fractions for this grade to solve problems
using information presented in line plots. For example, given
different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the
amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all
the beakers were redistributed equally.
Differentiated Lesson : Above level students

Mrs. Pam keeps data on scores on Math test and surveys the amount
of time students need to practice Math problem solving in order to
improve scores. She records the data in the following table.

Time 15 minutes 20 minutes 25 minutes 30 minutes

required to
study
Math 52 60 68 76
Scores

Using a co-ordinate grid, make a line graph showing the data.

Please make sure you have the following components to your graph.
Required Components to score a full 7/7.
1) Title of the graph- 1 point
2) Labels for x and y axis- 1 point
3) Appropriate scale and interval- 1 point
4) Correctly graph the data from the table as a line graph along with
the coordinates- 1 point
5) Explain the relationship between time required to study and
Math scores- 1 point
6) Use the graph to estimate the time needed to score 100 points- 1
point
7) What is the time required if a student wants to score 56 points- 1
point
