1. ANSWERS

A. What is not language? Include the concepts of grammar, written language and thought.

According to Steven it is very important not to confuse language with three other

things, although they are related and these are:

• Written language: we have the example of a baby, he learns what writing is and how

it is through his academic history but does not deduce or construct it as speech.

• Grammar: to be able to write you need grammar because it is the beauty of writing.

• Not to confuse language into thought: our thought works in ways other than

language, that is to say thought language is necessary to understand language, but it

is not language, these are Steven’s words.

B. What is language?

 For Steven Pinker, a language is looking for new ways to express our

thoughts, and when we know a language, we don’t just memorize a very

long list of sentences, but have internalized a grammar, algorithm or

recipe for combining elements into new assemblies.

C. What concept is developed with the famous Noan Chomsky’s phrase “Colorless

green ideas sleep furiously”?

 It should be noted that for Steven this phrase makes no sense, that is the

concept of this phrase has a linguistic application and can become difficult

to understand because of its too many dependencies and as Pinker says

this phrase has linked words where one of them can be the answer, but it’s

still a well-formed English prayer.

D. What is the basic explanation for the fact that a person speaks a foreign language with

a specific accent?

 The basic explanation for a person speaking a foreign language with a

specific accent is because of the poverty logic of the entry since it has not

been shown that learning grammar is truly universal, then the reason why

it is known whether or not it is foreign is because of the sounds and the

sequence of the language which are rules of the English phonology, but

when someone learns English he carries the rules of the phonology of his

first language applying it in his second language; The word that concludes

this explanation is the "accent".

E. Despite the great advances of computational linguistics, what have been some typical

linguistic difficulties for computers to process human language?

 The advancement of computational linguistics has had problems which

have been improving, but there’s still a way to go because speech

compression is easier for a human than for a computer because humans

pronounce letters differently depending on the resonant, But the computer

is only programmed to take these sounds in separate letters and our brain

binds them together, plus we deduce through one word the beginning of

the other, It’s like listening to speak a foreign language, we don’t know

what the ends of sentences or words are, we hear them all the way through,

that happens with computational linguistics.

2. QUESTIONS

A. What does Steven Pinker mean when he talks about the dependencies of words in

a sentence?

 In this case he was referring to the famous phrase of Chomsky since

according to Steven the language has dependencies that is according to its

positions can mean different points being a word the answer of the

sentence, but to simple reading it is difficult for the reader to understand.

B. Do we apply the phonology of our mother tongue in the foreign language and for

this reason it is recognized that English in this case is our second language?

 Yes, since our vowels sound different and we pronounce them differently

and many times we do not realize, so we apply the phonology of our first

language and also known as accent.

C. Mention one of the facts that a computer is having trouble understanding speech?

 A computer is systematized and often understands something completely

different from what it hears as each vowel or consonant actually comes

out differently depending on what comes before and comes after.
