Reminders!

No smoking!

Wear Personal Protective equipment (PPE) properly in the laboratory.

Perform aseptic technique.

Check laboratory supplies weekly and properly label materials.

Calibrate and check equipment and tools.

Verify patient identification and pertinent medical records.

Accurately label patient's samples.

Properly handle biohazard samples.

Review procedures and properly undertake specimen fixation,


embedding, processing, microtomy, staining, and examination.

Do not use cryospray.

Subscribe to proper waste disposal and sterilization of tools.

Ask for help and communicate to lab personnel.


1 Collection of Specimen

Specimin Accessioning

Label specimen with


patient description

Assign unique lab


number to specimen

Conduct gross
examination

Remove a sample from


specimen for processing
2 Place tissue sample in
a cassette

Tissue is fixated to reduce


degradation
(common fixative is
formaldehyde)

Specimen Processing

In processing, water is
removed and paraffin
wax is added

Cassette is removed from


machine for embedding
3 Samples are removed
from cassette and
embedded
using hot and cold
surfaces

Tissue is transferred to a
mould and paraffin wax
is added

The tissue is sliced using


the microtome into
paper thin sections

The thin tissue is


immersed in a warm
water bath to remove
creases

The tissue is picked up


by a glass slide
4 The tissue sample is
stained with dye

Slide is analysed in a
light microscope

Lab Histopathologist
assesses if slide is
qualified for diagnostic
interpretation

Slide is observed for


diagnosis

complete report by
histopathologist

discussion, consultation
with surgeons, other
medical workers
