Nusrat Bags Nolan

The contemporary film sensation Nusrat Faria has bagged a Hollywood film through her debut
stint as a vocalist of the controversial pop number aptly named ‘Pataka’. The single has
received overwhelming attention to the point of getting noticed by the veteran cerebral, often
nonlinear, storytelling, acclaimed writer-director Christopher Nolan. Nolan and Fariha are in the
process of signing a movie deal which will be shot in the exotic locales of Morocco and will be
based on Christine Mangan’s thriller Tangerine.

In April 2018, Dhallywood film star Nusrat Fariha Mazhar debuted as a pop vocalist with her
single titled ‘Pataka’. The song was composed by Pritam Hasan and written by Rakib Hasan
Rahul, stars vocalist herself belting out the song in her tone-deaf voice. In the song, Mazhar is
sporting a sultry makeup, and contorting her body into sexually explicit poses in a mechanical
workshop of sorts that has phantom mechanics welding the fiery sparks for everything they
have got. Despite the overt attempts to please the masses with usual female objectifying visuals
and peppy music that would make everyone in a discotheque cheerfully dancing the night way,
the song garnered controversial fame. Many did not appreciate the actor moonlighting as a
vocalist. Furthermore, her pretentious enunciation of the lyrics in a bid to make her look cool has
distorted the chorus that lyrically ought to sound as pataka [firecracker] to many sounds as rape
for taka [Bangladeshi currency]. Needless, Mazhar became a butt of many jokes and was
incessantly trolled on social media. As a result, the like to dislike ratio was bizarrely negative
and quite high.

Despite such reactions, the song was shared over 2 million times and received traction both in
India and Bangladesh due to Mazhar’s previous popularity in Indo-Bangla movies. The song
reached many Indians and landed in the insta stories of Bollywood archivist Shivendra Singh
Dungarpur. Dungarpur found the song quite entertaining and shared it with his 3, 000 followers
on his Instagram account. Among the 3,000 followers, Christopher Nolan is one of them, who
has befriended Dungarpur in his latest visit to India. Dungarpur and Nolan share the same
passion to preserve celluloid in this digital age.
Nolan, who is an academy award-winning director and has made blockbuster hits such as The
Dark Knight, The Prestige, found Mazhar captivating and her zombie performance a good fit for
his next film.

In March, Nolan declared to direct debut writer Christine Mangan’s thriller Tangerine however,
until April he had not shortlisted the female protagonist for the film. By mid-June, Nolan reached
out to Mazhar and flew her to California for a screen test and the rest is history.

Since June, Mazhar has been busy with the auditions of Tangerine, we reached out to her over
the phone and asked how she is feeling. She reported back that she is over the moon about
getting the role and she is hoping to finish the movie in time.
