Fiona the Flourishing Flower

Fiona is a beautiful little

seed. She is round and
small. Fiona has lived in a
package at HomeDepot her
entire life!

Fiona lives with all of her

family in a very small and
tight package. She is
starting to get
claustrophobic and annoyed
with all of her seed
brothers and sisters so she
is ready to get out of there.
She is ready to make a
change, live on her own, and
GROW up.
Fiona squirmed and wiggled her way to the top of the
package, kicking and pushing through all of her seed
family. Then she ripped it open. She escaped from the
package and hopped her way into a nearby flower bed.

She was so comfortable in this flower bed that

she was pretty sure she had found her new home.
The soil was rich with nutrients, there was plenty
of space for her to grow, and she was almost
positive it was home. To be sure, Fiona dug down
deep into the soil and buried herself until she was
PLANTED in the dirt.
Fiona began to grow in her new home. She began to grow slowly
with only the smallest of changes. She went through a process
called germination, where a new leaf emerged and at that point
Fiona had turned from a seed into a sprout!

Fiona was so comfortable and so happy that

she decided that this was her home and she
was going to stay here forever. She wanted
to GROW up and GROW old in her flower bed.
Fiona would stay in this spot for a very long time, during which
she grew many roots. The roots extended far across the ground
and helped Fiona get all the nutrients she needed to be healthy
and happy.

Once Fiona's roots were strong enough and she was healthy
enough, she produced a STEM. She decided that she didn't like
where she was. She still loved her flower bed but she hadn't seen
the sun in a very long time so she wanted to get back to the
surface. Fiona pushed her stem up and up until she finally reached
the surface.
Fiona's stem reached the
surface and she was
overjoyed! She could feel
the fresh air and the cool
mist and, most importantly,
the warmth of the sun on
her leaves!

The sun made her feel like a new

plant. She was getting bigger,
stronger, and healthier than ever
before. Once she could feel the sun's
rays, she started going through
photosynthesis which is a process
that helps her continue to grow into
a mature plant!
Fiona who started off as a small little seed had turned into a
SEEDLING because of the sun helping her grow. She would keep
growing and growing until she was a very big flower.

Once Fiona was a full grown

and mature flower, she
thought that she should do
something about her
appearance to make her look
a little bit more appealing.

She was seeing all of her friends

attract so much attention from
all of the local bees and birds
that she wanted to get some of
that action.
Fiona decided that it was about time that she bloomed
some flowers. So that night she pushed out some
flower buds and in the morning when the sun shined on
them they opened up into the most beautiful flowers
that anyone had ever seen!

From that day forward all of the bees and birds were
interested in her flowers! They would come over and
smell them and tell her how pretty they were. Little
did they know that Fiona's flowers actually produce
little seeds of their own!
So every time one of the birds or the bees came and
sniffed Fiona they accidentally picked up some seeds
just like Fiona used to be! These birds and bees would
fly all around town with Fiona's little seeds on their
feet and would drop them into flower beds of their
own.
The birds and bees picking up the seeds and dropping them
in other places is a process called pollination! This process
is one of the most important things in the world for
keeping plants alive and reproducing.
Fiona grew up and grew old after many many years in her flower
bed. She produced many flowers through hot summers and cold
winters. She made friends with many bees and many birds.
Eventually Fiona began to very tired and started to slump over
as many plants do.

Fiona realized that she was getting tired and she had enjoyed her
time in the flower bed. She loved all of the flowers and seeds she
produced, she loved all of the friends that she had made but she
knew that it was her time to go.

As Fiona began to slump over, she

perked up and saw a few tiny little
stems begin to emerge from the
flower bed. The stems had small
flower buds and out emerged
flowers just like Fiona's.

Fiona knew that they were from her

seeds and that they had been
dropped in her flower bed. She was
at peace knowing that she had come
a long way from being a small seed
in a crowded package.
