Activity 2.

Seeking Freedom in Free-Writing

It’s easy to throw a fit, rage, cry and shout when experiencing negative emotions
brought by separation. You can either be at the receiving end or the one who initiated
the split but this does not excuse you to feel sad or lonely.
To keep the relationship between you and your partner civil and healthy (for the sake of
the kids and of the marriage), it is best to express unheard thoughts or bottled-up
feelings by letting your mind wander and jotting down what you feel.
It doesn’t have to be of a specific format or it doesn’t have to be formal. You can thread
sentences together and let your feelings guide your write-ups.
As a law student, it is understood that you have the most insignificant amount of
knowledge when it comes to the grounds of legal separation. Of course, such learning
will only grow once you progress in your studies.
To help you solidify your knowledge, this writing exercise will allow you to reason out
whether or not a case or situation possesses one or many grounds that constitute a
legal separation.
The only catch for this activity is you have to let your mind run wild while setting your
timer for 25 minutes. Here’s how to prepare for this activity.
1. Gather all of the items you’ll need for free writing (bottle of water, colorful pens,
tissue paper, and everything you can think of so that you won’t bother leaving
your seat).
2. Pick a case from your readings and read it until you fully understand the contents
of the case.
3. Set your clock or phone timer for 25 minutes.
4. Once you’re ready to go, scribble to your heart’s content. (In your paper, make
sure to identify what grounds of legal separation are present, how each ground
affects the Supreme Court’s decision, and what would be the likely situation or
result of the decision to both partner).
5. Keep in mind that during the 25 minute mark, you are not allowed to peek into
the facts of the case. You can only refer to what you have remembered.
Free-writing is a great writing exercises for individuals who wants to exercise their mind
and express their heavy thoughts. Moreover, it will exercise their mind for memorization
which is essential for law school.
