How to Use this Competency-Based Learning Material
This learning material is designed to guide you in learning at your own pace.
To start with, talk with your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the
training for this module. Most probably your trainer will also be your supervisor
or manager. He/she is there to support you and guide you the correct way to do
things. From time to time you will be required to practice and demonstrate the
skills that you’ve learned from this module and you will be requiring some
assistance from your trainer (as instructed in the learning material).

To proceed with the learning session you just have go through the Learning
Activity Sheet where in you will follow series of learning instructions towards
attaining the learning outcome.

At the end part of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to record
important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that may provide
further details to your trainer or assessor. A Record of Achievement will be
provided to you by your trainer for you to accomplish once you complete the
module. Upon completion of this module, study the evidence plan at the end of
the last learning element of this module then ask your instructor to assess you.
You will be given a certificate of completion as proof that you met the standard
requirements (knowledge, skills and attitude) for this module. The assessment
could be made in different methods, as prescribed in the competency standards.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your instructors for

assistance. Your instructor will always be available to assist you during the
training.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills covered in
this module because you have:
 been working for some time
 already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in particular
skill, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you would not
have to undergo the same training again. If you have a qualification or
Certificate of Competency from previous trainings, show it to your trainer. If the
skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this module, they may
become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not sure about
the level of your skills, discuss this with your trainer

The power comes from the Electric Power Company pole line that
provides a cable drop to the main home fuse box. The voltage is
distributed throughout the home concrete walls through a network of
electrical wire and a number of AC wall outlets and junction boxes.
From this set up comes a single AC outlet where the refrigerator is
located.

Those parts in the block diagram plus the other electrical

components are checked in accordance with the manufacturer's
specification sheet. Sheets should be compared and analyzed according
to the following aspects:

It is advisable to identify and record whatever defects in the power supply

and electrical components that as a reference in future troubleshooting.

Recording the defects of power supply and electrical components is easy

but identifying those defects will require knowledge and skills to come up with a
decision whether it is defective or not

Fuses in the box can be tested using an AC voltmeter and so with the
outlets and wires. A supplemental continuity test should be performed to

Learning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, the trainee will be able

What is an Electrical Circuit

A source of current wired to a load constitutes an electrical circuit. The

current must be able to flow from line 1 of the source, to the load and back to
the source through line 2. The load is the purpose for which current is
harnessed to a length of wire.

The lamp in the circuit is the load. In any circuit, loads are represented by
the symbol of resistance ( ~~\AAA/~~~)- Thus, the resistance symbol can mean a
light, a stove, an electric motor, a heater or anything which serves as load to
conduct or consume current.

Loose connection is a defect in an electrical circuit that will paralyze the
entire operation of the circuit. The condition of an open circuit can be detected
by both AC voltmeter and ohmmeter in different method.

in joint or connection because of its vulnerability to climate change and
other factors.

To remedy the situation, make adjustment on the joint of wires

indicated. Hold the lower end of the joint using a pliers while twisting the rest of
the joint in a clockwise direction. It would be advisable to apply solder to the
joint to make it permanent and tape it using an electrical tape.

Circuit malfunction is not only caused by a loose connection.

Sometimes it is the electrical components that are in question such as the
plug, switch, fuse and even the load. Those components can be easily tested
using an ohmmeter continuity and resistance check respectively.

When defective component has been isolated it is then replaced by

a new one with the same specification.

After the electrical repair and reinstallation, the workplace should be

cleaned and cleared of debris. Restoring the workplace to its original clean and
orderly state is a must.

LET US REMEMBER

Electric repairs and installation simply mean restoring the function of the
circuit to its intended function in a scientific manner.
