1. Figure shows a cross section of a long cooling fin of width w, thickness t, and thermal conductivity k that
is bonded to a hot wall, maintaining its base (at x = 0) at a temperature T w. Heat is conducted steadily
through the fin in the plane of Fig. so that the fin temperature T obeys Laplace's equation. (Temperature
variations along the length of the fin in the z-direction are ignored.).
Heat is lost from the sides and tip of the fin by convection to the surrounding air (radiation is neglected
at sufficiently low temperatures). Here, Ts is the temperature of surface, and Tα is the temperature of air
in degrees Fahrenheit, are the temperatures at a point on the fin surface and of the air, respectively.
The heat transfer coefficient h obeys the dimensional correlation h =0.21(Ts-Tα)1/3 [BTU/(ft2 h °F)].
(a) Set up the equations for a numerical solution of this problem to determine the temperature every
0.25 in.
(b) Describe in detail the step-by-step procedure for solving the equation of part (a) and evaluating the
temperature within the fin and at the surface.
(c) Solve the problem numerically using the following quantities:
