1. - Consider a bar of square cross section that is 3 cm on a side. The bar is copper (k=401 W/mºC) and
the heat transfer coefficient is 10 W/ m2ºK. Estimate the temperature at point p by means of finite
difference.

2. – Use the finite difference method to approximate the solution of the boundary-value
Problem.

Using: ∆𝑥 = 0.1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 λ = 0.25, present the temperature distribution in a table and a graph.
3. –A rectangular safe box has asbestos insulation (k=0.07 W/mºC, 𝛼 = 0.4*10-6m2/s) of 10 cm thick. It
is estimated that in a fire the temperature on the outer surface of the asbestos remains at 800ºC. if the
temperature of the box insulation was 30ºC before the accident occurred, calculate the time the fire
can last without damaging the documents inside (maximum temperature for the documents is 70ºC).
Use finite differences method and 𝜆 = 1/4. Graph the results.
4. - There is a urea solution contained in a 1 inner diameter tube with an initial concentration of 0.02
gr/L. A semipermeable membrane connects the tube with a vial that has a urea solution with 2 gr/L.
Another membrane connects it with a reagent with which the urea reacts to disappear instantly. If it is
considered that the urea diffusion occurs only in the longitudinal direction of the tube, calculate the
urea concentration along the tube, after 10 minutes. The diffusivity of urea is 0.007 cm2 /h. Apply ∆𝑥 =
1
