1. Sketch the symbol of a tetrode valve and label it clearly.

2. Explain the following components and their applications:

a) Tunnel diode
b) Varactor diode
c) Toroid Coil

3. Draw the schematic diagram and the frequency response curves of the following circuits:

a) Low pass filter

b) High pass filter
c) Band pass filter
d) Band stop filter

4. Calculate the cut-off frequency for a high pass filter consisting of 200pF capacitor connected in
series with a 20kΩ resistor.

5. Define the following terms:

a) Reception
b) Selection
c) Detection
d) Propagation

6. You are told that the transmitter you need to fix is totally dead. What would be the first stage that
you will check for faults and the reason why?

7. Sketch the diagram of a high level modulator. Compare it to a low level modulator and explain
why it is the most commonly used modulator.

8. Explain the need for matching of circuit impedance in radios and transmitters and show two
examples of how it can be done.

9. List down the steps to be taken in planning a radio base station. Explain the purpose of each step.

10. You are given a radio receiver that is on but not receiving any stations. After signal tracing, you
suspect the local oscillator to be faulty. How can you confirm your suspicion – list down the steps
you will take.
