TRAILER SUCTION HOPPER DREDGER
WHAT IS TRAILER SUCTION HOPPER DREDGER(TSHD)?

✓ The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) is a versatile vessel that unites dredging,
transport and discharge in a single piece of equipment.
✓ TSHDs are self-propelled
✓ The dredging installation consists of one or two suction arms with dragheads that are lowered
off the side of the vessel in order to collect the soil of the seabed
✓ The dredged soil is stored in the dredger’s hold for transport.
✓ Trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) are hydraulic dredgers
MAIN FEATURES OF TRAILING SUCTION HOPPER DREDGERS
HOW TSHD WORKS?
PRODUCTION CYCLE OF TSHD

• Loading time
• Turning time
• Sailing time loaded
• Time to discharge
• Sailing time empty

ADVANTAGES OF TSHD

 Relative immunity to weather and sea conditions;

 Independent operation;
 Minimal effect on other shipping;
 The ability to transport dredged material over long distances;
 Relatively high rate of production;
 Simple, and hence inexpensive, mobilisation procedure.
DISADVANTAGES OF TSHD

 Inability to dredge strong materials;

 Inability to work in very restricted areas;
 Sensitivity to concentrations of debris;
 Dilution of dredged materials during the loading process.
TSHD IN BANGLADESH

TSHD will be used to dredge the main channel of Responsible company: Jan De Nul (Belgium
PAYRA COAL POWER PLANT project. Based Company)

The works are…

TSHD IN BANGLADESH(CONT.)

 TSHD will be used to restore 24,000 km of waterways on major rivers for the smooth movement of vessels
 Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has been collecting these dredgers as part of the
government's procurement of 35 TSHD dredgers
