Summarize, in Your own words (do not copy from the website) two of the methods for sustainable
agriculture from “Solutions: Advance Sustainable Agriculture: Using science-based practices, we can
produce abundant food while preserving our soil, air and water” including all hyperlinks used.2.3. List
one method that you think would work well in your local village/town/region. Why would it work well?
Explain.4.5. Please outline in your own words, one other new thing you learned this week in the course.
Howdoes it apply to your life?

A mix of methods could make it possible to cultivate sustainable agriculture everywhere in the world. I
chose to write about rotating crops and integrating livestock. Crop rotation refers to growing a variety
ofcrops in rotation instead of the same plants every year. Using this method enriches and naturally
protects soil, without using fertilizer or chemical pesticides. The second solution is the reintegration of
animals into agriculture. This means, that animals would be a part of the farm and their manure would
be directly used to fertilize fields. For sure smaller farms function this way, however, large corporations
don’t support this approach. The best method for my local area would be rotating crops. This is a well-
known approach and has been done before. I am sure, every agriculture student is aware of it and I
simply do not understand, why it has been stopped. Nothing of this is new, there must be some other
important factors, why farmers don’t practice it often. I assume, that using pesticides is simply cheaper.
Also, maybe not all plants are asefficient and provide as much profit and others. Maybe better
counseling would help how to manage fields most efficiently. This week I learned about a range of
methods that could be used (but are not) for sustainable agriculture. It was interesting to read more
about different kinds of renewable energy and I liked the discussion forum. For sure, I am more aware of
environmental issues and I consider it more often in my daily life.
