Many drugs, legal or not, work by either stimulating or inhibiting specific metabolic enzymes.

As

such, products of metabolic reactions can be selectively increased or decreased depending on

the drug’s mechanism of action in the cell. In your readings, you learned that statins are a class

of drugs used to reduce cholesterol levels. Their mechanism of action is to inhibit the enzyme

HMG-CoA reductase. HMG-CoA reductase is the enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol from lipids

in the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, the levels of cholesterol synthesized in the body can be

reduced.

You will research and present a drug of your choice for this assignment. You are free to choose

any drug as long as it works by inhibiting a specific enzyme; e.g., statins. You cannot, however,

use statins.

Write a 2-3 page (500 – 750 words, 12 point font) paper including the following elements. Be

sure to compose your work with your own words. Do not copy and paste from any source.

 Identify the drug as synthetic or biological/natural and describe the chemical structure.

 Describe how the chemical structure of the drug is necessary for function; i.e., the

cellular mechanism of action.

 Identify the drug as either a competitive or allosteric inhibitor. Describe how this works.

 Identify one or more adverse effects of the drug. Explain the effect based on the drug’s

effect on metabolism.

 Use in-text citation and provide source references for at least 3 sources. The textbook

can be one source.

o When citing articles or other types of documents, follow standard guidelines as

introduced on "Citing references in scientific research papers".

Zocor (Simvastatin) may be a lipid-lowering agent that's derived synthetically from the

fermentation of Aspergillus terreus. it's a biological/natural drug. it's a potent competitive

inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme. A reductase (hydroxymethylglutaryl COA

reductases), which is the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. it's going to also

interfere with steroid production. because of the induction of hepatic LDL receptors, it

increases the breakdown of cholesterin. (PubChem)

Zocor (simvastatin) is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor or statin. This medication reduces levels
of bad cholesterol and triglycerides within the blood and at the identical time increases levels of

fine cholesterol.

Zocor is employed to lower cholesterol and triglycerides within the blood, but it also reduces

the danger of stroke, coronary failure, and other issues in patients with diabetes, coronary

cardiovascular disease, or other linked risk factors. it's prescribed to adults and kids older than

10 years.

Zocor modifies the way that cholesterol is produced within the body to cut back the amount of

bad cholesterol within the blood. It stops the plaque of build-up within the blood vessels and

prevents cardiac problems. There is also an opportunity to accelerating the uptake of cholesterol within
the liver where it gets de-escalated.Zocor could be a competitive inhibitor drug. It means it’s binding to
an enzyme through impair reaction, but it prevents the substrate from binding. Only the competitive
inhibitor or only the substrate is absolute to the enzyme. The inhibitor and substrate compete to induce
the enzyme. A competitive inhibitor decreases the number of enzyme molecules which bind the
substrate.(Khanacademy)An undesirable effect of this drug may well be the breakdown of musculus
tissue which ends upin renal disorder. However, it happens very rarely. Symptoms like unexplained
muscle pain, weakness especially in the midst of fever, tiredness, and dark urine should be consulted
with a doctor.Larger amounts than prescribed by the health care provider mustn't be taken, because it's
going to cause serious or maybe life-threatening side effects. If the patient ever had liver or uropathy,
diabetes, or a thyroid disorder, it should be told to the doctor. the identical applies tothose that are of
Chinese descent or who drink alcohol daily. Pregnant women shouldn't take it,because it's going to harm
the baby. Grapefruit and related products shouldn't be taken at the identical time as Zocor, because
they'll interact and cause possible negative effects.References:Multum, C. (2017). Zocor: Uses, Dosage,
