REPORT

My experience at Tripura Bar Association began on 30 th June 2019 and ended on 31st July 2019.

Tripura Bar Association is a lawyers association who handle their cases individually but work under
the same office. Usually, after first year, people are advised to work in a NGO as there is very little
work that might be involved for a first year in an association. But I am indebtedly grateful to my
mentor Uttam Kumar Majumder for handling my first internship. After I expressed my inclination
towards Litigation in future, he told me that I could start my work under him this time and the
sooner I would start, the better it would be. He also assured me that there was a lot of work that I
could do in the first year as well. I am not an inch regretful about the fact that I chose my internship
under him even though it did not involve the NGO experience. This has been a huge learning curve
for me and it has only turned me more into the course and the work I want to do in my future.

The very first day involved me getting to know more of the advocates in the association and interact
with them to help me more accustomed to the environment. The other advocates were also very
welcoming and supportive.

The work progressed as I sat around him to notice how the clients were approached, how different
types of people were handled differently by him and very importantly how honesty was exercised in
the approach about a particular case.

I also visited High Court with him to know about the court proceedings. The court etiquettes indeed
take a lot of experience to build.

This experience also introduced to me to the app “e-court services”, where I found out all previous
and running cases of the District courts, High courts and Supreme court. The app has provisions of
keeping a check on a case status as well the causelist. It allows any person to know about a particular
case if he/she has the case number, knows the details of the parties, filing number, FIR number, or
the advocates. There are also options of searching through an Act, Case type or Caveat.

My experience also involved around four days of work from home as my mentor had to leave
towards the Sonamura District Court for handling a particular case. The case type was Civil Misc.
between Smt Suprava Das v Smt Urmila Das. My mentor was handling the petition. The case
involved Section 174 of the Motor vehicles Act.

In this internship I have read plaints, written statements, examination-in-chief by way of affidavits
and cross of witness and judgments. I have also prepared summaries of the various case files handed
over to me.

The most interesting part of my internship was in the later part when I was given just the facts of the
case and was asked to frame the points. I learnt how important it is to dig the small elements in
specific cases.

This experience has not only given me a lot of valuable inputs for my future but also has been
successful in creating a bond with my mentor as he continues to send me PDFs of cases he thinks I
will find exciting.

Truly grateful for this opportunity.
