One of my biggest goals is to enter the medical field and provide help for others. Ever
since I was little I had this curiosity for the human body. I was fascinated by the simplistic things
that would occur such as a cut healing. I would always wonder how and why things like this
happened. I referred to it being magic and years later I still think the way the human body works
is something magical. I was quite odd as a child, I could be playful but was often quiet and
observant. I always felt like I saw the world differently as if I was looking at it through my own
scope. People that know me today would say the same. Whenever talking about something
normal my brain takes over and thinks about it in a complex way and once it’s started there’s no
stopping it. I am quick to pull out my phone and do research until I find the answers I am looking
for. Besides having a fascination for medicine and the human body, I have been known to be
caring for others. Seeing someone helpless drives me to be at their assistance in any way
possible. When there is nothing I can do it often brings me down. This was the case when my
grandma had been diagnosed with cancer. She was sick and I was exasperated that I wasn’t able
to do anything. We were told there was no cure and we could only hope for the best. She died a
few years later. Having this happen only pushed me further into the goal of being in the medical
field, hoping one day I could solve cancer and Alzheimer’s. Going to GCU would help me
achieve these goals due to its programs. The program in particular would be the Bachelor in
biology with Pre-Med degree. This program will allow me to further my understanding of the
human anatomy and heath care facility. Taking a class like this will prepare me for my MCAT
test so that I am able to advance to my career goal. Attending GCU would sharpen my
communication and professionalism skills as well as give me a good insight into scientific
studies. While attending GCU I hope to get a perspective on the health care of specifically
Arizona since I will most likely be staying in Arizona for work. This enables me to get familiar
with the competitiveness of the medical field while being able to prepare for it. Not only will I be
learning at GCU but I will hopefully be making important connections. Connections that can
A personal and international concern that has importance for me would be the unsolved
issues of the Native American community being ignored. Native Americans have been
wrongfully dragged throughout history. With being forced out of their own land, killed, and held
as slaves, the Native American population has never been the same. There are still many modern
day issues for Native Americans that are going unheard and unchanged. It may come to surprise
you that Native American votes are being suppressed. Most Natives live on reservations due to
having almost all their land taken, and are miles away from voting polls. Even when mailing in
applications for voting cards they are rejected due to not having traditional street names.
Reservations usually use landmarks and crossroads for addresses resulting in Natives being
‘denied a ballot since the address on their IDs did not match the addresses assigned by the
counties for the voter registration database.’ This isn’t the only problem where Natives are
receiving any justice. Thousands of indigenous women have gone missing and the numbers are
only continuing to rise. Many reports of these missing women have gone ignored and bodies
have been found days or even weeks later. 35% of these missing women are under 21 and 27%
are under 18. This brings importance to me because the situation is being swept under the rug.
Many people do not hear about the missing women and the indigenous people are left with their
voices unheard. Families report that they had no investigations happen when they reported
missing loved ones and that the authorities did not seem to care. With all the movements going
on in today's society this is one of them that has not been brought to the attention it deserves.
Most of the missing women are in Canada but there are a number of cases in the United States as
well.
