I. Objectives

 To utilize the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment to assess high risk postures
within upper extremity tasks.
 To use RULA worksheet and Ergo Fellow software to conduct the RULA
Assessment Method.
 To propose a new method to reduce risk while working.
II. Instruments and Components
 Laptop/mobile device to accomplish RULA worksheet.
 Ergo Fellow Software
III. General Instructions
1. Each group will assess the level of MSD risk to the assigned task/activity
given below. (See photos assigned for each group)
2. Use single page worksheet (RULA worksheet) to evaluate the score for each
of the following body regions: upper arm, lower arm, wrist, neck, trunk, and
legs.
3. After the data for each region is collected and scored, tables on the form are
then used to compile the risk factor variables, generating a single score that
represents the level of MSD risk.
4. Use ergo fellow software to validate your evaluation. Get a snapshot of all
steps considered to get the score for each body region.
TASK:

IV. DATA AND RESULTS

1. Use the RULA Assessment Method to obtain evaluate necessary scores for each
body region: upper arm, lower arm, wrist, neck, trunk, and legs.
2. Use the RULA worksheet to collect and score the body regions.
3. After the data for each region is collected and score, use the tables on the form to
compile the risk factor variables, generating a single score that represents the level
of MSD risk.
4. What is the level of MSD risk for the job being evaluated?
 The task that is being evaluated is grinding metal and upon analyzing it through
the use of RULA Employee Assessment Worksheet and calculating the data
obtained, the RULA score resulted to 7 and evaluated that the specific task is
required to undergo investigation and implement change on it. It falls under the
category of very-high risk level and prone to MSD.

5. Use the Ergo Fellow software to validate your analysis.

6. Take a screenshot of all the steps performed using the software.
7. Did you come up with the same result?
 Yes, upon calculating it through the use of Ergo Fellow software and manual
calculation, the results obtained are the same. The RULA score is 7 which
requires investigation and changes immediately.

8. Is there a risk? What is the action required?

 Yes, there is a risk and it was classified as very-high risk. The RULA score is 7
and the action is required. Changes in the workstation, time duration and
allowances, and loads given to the worker are needed. Developing programs and
trainings are also suggested and will further explain in the recommendation under
the results and discussions.

V. CONCLUSION

A postural analysis can determine whether a person has any postural deviations,
imbalances, muscle weaknesses, or any other faults in their movement patterns which
could cause fatigue, pain or discomfort. In this laboratory experiment, we have conducted
an analysis where we are able to understand the work posture and its basic application.
Through the use of RULA worksheet, manual assessment and Ergo Fellow application,
we could say that these tools are very important in assessing the reasons behind various
injuries in work since static or repetitive loadings of body that are caused by work
activities leads to certain postural alterations, which can ultimately cause of high risk
posture within upper extremity tasks. Based on the result of the assessment. The RULA
score that we got is seven, that has an equivalent intervention of investigation and
changes are required immediately. In this scenario, implementation of changes in some
work activities must be implemented immediately so that injuries can be prevented as
soon as possible.

VI. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Based on the results of the experiment, where the RULA score is seven (7) which is
equivalent to intervention of investigation and changes are required immediately.

The proposed new method to help reduce the upper extremity MSD risk while working are
follows:

1. Make sure workstations are at a suitable height for comfortable working (and that
suitable table and footrests are provided). Consider adjustable workstations.
2. Change the workstation layout to improve the posture of the workers, particularly
when they are applying force.
3. Time allowances. Reduce the length of time that operators do the same task, allowing
regular changes in posture.
4. Reduce the amount of force/load depending on the operator's capacity also the
repetition and prolonged fixed postures.
5. It is very important to have ergonomics training, education and developing programs
such as stretching and flex before starting the job especially when it comes to heavy
task which is a very high risk and prone to MSD.
6. It's important also to ensure the tools and equipment that using the operator fits the
job/task and it should be the tools or equipment fitted operators. Using the wrong tools
or equipment cause immense discomfort or MSD.
