Ethiopian clothing
The bernos was frequently worn by the elite highlanders. Today, average citizens sometimes wear it in traditional ceremonies
and at special occasions. Social status is indicated by the garment's decorative pattern.

called ṭibébé (ጢቤቤ). The tibebe is between 1 and 2 inches at
each end, with two variations: one composed of only one color and
the other with multiple colors and patterns.
The netela can be worn in different ways. For general wear, the
netela covers the back and shoulders and the border is folded up
over the right shoulder. However, when attending church the two
layers of the netela are opened and the border goes over both
shoulders. When the border is worn around the face or shoulders,
it is a sign of mourning, but in moments of leisure the border goes
over the left shoulder.

Discover Ethiopian Herbal Teas
Ethiopia is not just known for coffee but wonderful herbal teas as well.
Many teas are grown organically on small, sustainable farms that
prioritize worker livelihoods and many are grown around the region
of Butajira in the southern highlands. On average, tea farms each have
a land holding of less than one hectare. There, they plant, tend and
harvest their crops by hand at around 7,000 feet in volcanic, nutrient-
rich soil along the Rift Valley.
Ethiopian Mint
With a cool and refreshing taste, this is the most popular herbal
tea in Ethiopia. Smaller-leaved than its European cousin,
Ethiopian Mint has more flavor concentrated in its leaves. It is
native to the Rift Valley where it is grown in volcanic soil at an
altitude of around 7,000 feet. Naturally caffeine-free, it can be
consumed as mint tea alone or added to other drinks to
provide a minty kick.
Moringa
Distinct from its South Asian cousin (Moringa oleifera), African
Moringa (Moringa stenopetala) is native only to Ethiopia and
northern Kenya where it has long been known as a nutrient-
rich “superfood” staple that provides many health benefits. It is
grown in volcanic soil at an altitude of around 7,000 feet. As a
tea, African Moringa tea has notes of black pepper, corn and
green olives. It is naturally caffeine-free.
Abyssinian Sage
With a sweet and savory pine-like flavor, Abyssinian Sage has
both culinary and health-promoting qualities. It has a distinctive
appearance with long, soft-spear leaves, a fuzzy texture and
muted coloring. Its unique flavor is derived from the rich
volcanic soil of southern Ethiopia where it is grown at an
altitude of around 7,000 feet. It is naturally caffeine-free.

Definition of herbs
In general use, herbs are any plants used for flavoring, food, medicine, or perfume. Culinar y use typically
distinguishes herbs as referring to the leafy green par ts of a plant (either fresh or dried), from a "spice", a product
from another par t of the plant (usually dried), including seeds, berries, bark, roots and fruits. In Ethiopia several
culinar y herbs are produced: cher vil, chives, coriander, dill, green basil, lovage, mint, oregano, rocolla, thyme,
vernonia, etc. Next to that, the medical herbs produced in Ethiopia are described below.
1. Ar temisia abyssinica Ar temisia abyssinica or Chikugn (Amharic) is a species of wormwood that is traditionally
used for intestinal problems, for infectious diseases, and is anti-leishmanial (acts against Leishmania parasites). The
whole herb can be used to address tonsillitis, and an infusion is traditionally drunk as a remedy for colds, and
sickness in children.
2. Demakese Ocimumlamifolium Used to treat coughs and colds, the fresh leaves are squeezed and the juice
sniffed. The juice can also be used as an eye rinse for eye infection. Also used formich, an infection of fever with
headache and mouth blisters.
3. Aloe vera , or Eret in Amharic, is known for its cooling and cathar tic proper ties. It is used in Ethiopia for fever,
spleen and liver troubles, as well as‘knee troubles in old age’ and ‘eye treatment’. The juice of the plant would
be used on the breast of nursing mothers to assist with weaning as its bitter taste would discourage the baby
from suckling. The juice of the leaf is also known to be given to a motherin childbir th to ease labour. In western
medicine, the fresh juice of the Aloe vera plant is used as a topical application to cool burns, and the juice is
taken orally for digestive disturbance.
4. Zingibil (Amhar)or Dendabil (Tig.)The rhizome (root) of ginger is popularly used in Ethiopia for stomachache
and respirator y problems. It is chewed or masticated with ‘feto’ (Lepidium sativum) for stomach disorders. It is
also popularly used for its carminative (relieves gas ) and anti-nausea activities.
5. Gisewa (Amhar) or Withania somnifera Known to be used for coughs and asthma, as a narcotic and an anti-
epileptic in Ethiopia. Research notes other traditional uses for headache (as a dressing), paludism (malaria), ague,
fever, stomachache and as a diuretic. The smoke of the burning root is commonly inhaled for ‘Satan beshita’ or
‘devil disease’ (Asres 2001).
6. KeberchoEndemic to Ethiopia, Echinops kebericho, is used for fever and as a taenicidal herb (to expell
tapeworm). The smoke from burning the plant is inhaled to relieve headache and also as a cure for “evil eye”
(possession by evil spirits in Ethiopian folk religion).

The Assela wind power project is now entering its construction phase.
The facility will be located approximately 150 km south of the capital
Addis Ababa, near the city of Iteya in the regional state of Oromia. Its
construction has been entrusted to Siemens Gamesa Renewable
Energy, a company based in Zamudio, Spain. The park will consist of
29 turbines of 3.45 MW each. The entire installation will inject 100
MW into the Ethiopian electricity grid through a substation to be built
by the state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) with a loan of 10
million dollars from the African Development Bank (ADB).

subsidiary of Siemens Gamesa will have control of 60% of the
development of the project, while Simens Gamesa-Spain (the parent
company) will have the remaining 40% control.
The two subsidiaries of the company are also expected to operate
and maintain the Assela wind farm over a period of 5 years.

KORKOR LODGE –
TRADITIONAL STONE ECO
LODGE IN GHERALTA
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. Modern medical
science is marvelous but is limited by its focus on physical means and
methods of treatment. Methods imposed from outside whether they are
biochemical, mechanical or surgical, they drastically disrupt the body’s
self- regulatory functions and make it vulnerable to toxins and
debilitations. By focusing on relieving short-term symptoms, one ignores
the underlying root of the illness, which is exponentially detrimental to
curing of one’s illness. “ – Late Schree R.N. Kapoor
It’s very true that the simplest healing tools are the most powerful. It’s also
true that these are the ones that are most often overlooked. It should
be a priority to align ourselves with nature every single day — in how
we eat, how we move, and how we relax etc.
Richard Louv, the author of “Last Child in the Woods” writes about the
importance of nature in the lives of children. He coined the term, “nature
deficit disorder”.

Travel out to Help Out!
With the feeling that perhaps Ethiopia is over the worst of the
pandemic, Ethiopia is now getting back to work. The State of
Emergency was not renewed in early September, Government
offices are gradually opening with different offices set to open over
the coming month, and the country is now opening for tourism.
However, it comes as no surprise that there are almost no
international tourists, band this does mean that the tourism
industry is on its knees. Guides, scouts, cooks, drivers and hotel
workers have often not had any source of income since mid March.
It is essential that these tourism workers begin to earn some
money. Ethiopia desperately needs its own people to support this
sector. This is the time for people living in Addis and the other cities

tourism sites are empty. So you can visit and take your family to see
