Ethiopian clothing

This article describes the different garments of traditional and

historic Ethiopian clothing.
Bernos (also transliterated Barnos, Burnos) is a wool cloak-like garment and hood woven in one piece, worn by Ethiopian
and Eritrean highlanders. The term seems to be an adaptation of the Maghrebi version of Burnous. Donald N. Levine notes
that the wealthier men of Menz "wear the barnos, a tailored cape made of dark wool."

The bernos was frequently worn by the elite highlanders. Today, average citizens sometimes wear it in traditional ceremonies
and at special occasions. Social status is indicated by the garment's decorative pattern.

called ṭibébé (ጢቤቤ). The tibebe is between 1 and 2 inches at
each end, with two variations: one composed of only one color and
the other with multiple colors and patterns.
The netela can be worn in different ways. For general wear, the
netela covers the back and shoulders and the border is folded up
over the right shoulder. However, when attending church the two
layers of the netela are opened and the border goes over both
shoulders. When the border is worn around the face or shoulders,
it is a sign of mourning, but in moments of leisure the border goes

Discover Ethiopian Herbal Teas
Ethiopia is not just known for coffee but wonderful herbal teas as well.
Many teas are grown organically on small, sustainable farms that
prioritize worker livelihoods and many are grown around the region
of Butajira in the southern highlands. On average, tea farms each have
a land holding of less than one hectare. There, they plant, tend and
harvest their crops by hand at around 7,000 feet in volcanic, nutrient-
rich soil along the Rift Valley.

soothing Lavender Abyssinica is the perfect herbal tea for
bedtime. Made from the dried buds of Ethiopian lavender
flowers, it has a bright and flowery aroma that is beloved
around the world. The buds lift the taste of biscuits or cookies
and can be mixed with mint as a meat rub when not used for
tea. It is naturally caffeine-free.

Ethiopian Mint
With a cool and refreshing taste, this is the most popular herbal
tea in Ethiopia. Smaller-leaved than its European cousin,
Ethiopian Mint has more flavor concentrated in its leaves. It is
native to the Rift Valley where it is grown in volcanic soil at an
altitude of around 7,000 feet. Naturally caffeine-free, it can be
consumed as mint tea alone or added to other drinks to
provide a minty kick.

Moringa
Distinct from its South Asian cousin (Moringa oleifera), African
Moringa (Moringa stenopetala) is native only to Ethiopia and
northern Kenya where it has long been known as a nutrient-
rich “superfood” staple that provides many health benefits. It is
grown in volcanic soil at an altitude of around 7,000 feet. As a
tea, African Moringa tea has notes of black pepper, corn and
green olives. It is naturally caffeine-free.

Abyssinian Sage
With a sweet and savory pine-like flavor, Abyssinian Sage has
both culinary and health-promoting qualities. It has a distinctive
appearance with long, soft-spear leaves, a fuzzy texture and
muted coloring. Its unique flavor is derived from the rich
volcanic soil of southern Ethiopia where it is grown at an
altitude of around 7,000 feet. It is naturally caffeine-free.

Herbs in Ethiopia
Ethiopia has a long histor y of spice and herb production for the domestic market and has a unique, indigenous
product, Korarima cardamom (Aframomum korarima).Modest quantities of several spices have been expor ted
for centuries to countries in the Middle East and expor tsto Europe have developed over the past twenty
years(Wikipedia).

Definition of herbs
In general use, herbs are any plants used for flavoring, food, medicine, or perfume. Culinar y use typically
distinguishes herbs as referring to the leafy green par ts of a plant (either fresh or dried), from a "spice", a product
from another par t of the plant (usually dried), including seeds, berries, bark, roots and fruits. In Ethiopia several
culinar y herbs are produced: cher vil, chives, coriander, dill, green basil, lovage, mint, oregano, rocolla, thyme,
vernonia, etc. Next to that, the medical herbs produced in Ethiopia are described below.

Medicinal herbs in Ethiopia

1. Ar temisia abyssinica Ar temisia abyssinica or Chikugn (Amharic) is a species of wormwood that is traditionally
used for intestinal problems, for infectious diseases, and is anti-leishmanial (acts against Leishmania parasites). The
whole herb can be used to address tonsillitis, and an infusion is traditionally drunk as a remedy for colds, and
sickness in children.

2. Demakese Ocimumlamifolium Used to treat coughs and colds, the fresh leaves are squeezed and the juice
sniffed. The juice can also be used as an eye rinse for eye infection. Also used formich, an infection of fever with
headache and mouth blisters.

3. Aloe vera , or Eret in Amharic, is known for its cooling and cathar tic proper ties. It is used in Ethiopia for fever,
spleen and liver troubles, as well as‘knee troubles in old age’ and ‘eye treatment’. The juice of the plant would
be used on the breast of nursing mothers to assist with weaning as its bitter taste would discourage the baby
from suckling. The juice of the leaf is also known to be given to a motherin childbir th to ease labour. In western
medicine, the fresh juice of the Aloe vera plant is used as a topical application to cool burns, and the juice is
taken orally for digestive disturbance.

4. Zingibil (Amhar)or Dendabil (Tig.)The rhizome (root) of ginger is popularly used in Ethiopia for stomachache
and respirator y problems. It is chewed or masticated with ‘feto’ (Lepidium sativum) for stomach disorders. It is
also popularly used for its carminative (relieves gas ) and anti-nausea activities.

5. Gisewa (Amhar) or Withania somnifera Known to be used for coughs and asthma, as a narcotic and an anti-
epileptic in Ethiopia. Research notes other traditional uses for headache (as a dressing), paludism (malaria), ague,
fever, stomachache and as a diuretic. The smoke of the burning root is commonly inhaled for ‘Satan beshita’ or
‘devil disease’ (Asres 2001).

6. KeberchoEndemic to Ethiopia, Echinops kebericho, is used for fever and as a taenicidal herb (to expell
tapeworm). The smoke from burning the plant is inhaled to relieve headache and also as a cure for “evil eye”
(possession by evil spirits in Ethiopian folk religion).

The Ethiopian government has just completed the financing for the
construction of the Assela wind farm thanks to the validation of a
loan agreement previously signed between the Ministry of Finance
and Danske Bank. Denmark’s main bank is supporting the project with
a loan of 117.3 million euros, part of the financing promised by Prague.
The project, which is now entering its construction phase, will provide

adopted by Parliament. I am grateful to the Danish government for
generously providing grants and funding on favourable terms. In terms
of capacity development, Ethiopia will also learn and benefit
enormously from the Danish wind energy companies in terms of
production and operation of the facilities,” says Seleshi Bekele,
Ethiopia’s Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy.

The Assela wind power project is now entering its construction phase.
The facility will be located approximately 150 km south of the capital
Addis Ababa, near the city of Iteya in the regional state of Oromia. Its
construction has been entrusted to Siemens Gamesa Renewable
Energy, a company based in Zamudio, Spain. The park will consist of
29 turbines of 3.45 MW each. The entire installation will inject 100
MW into the Ethiopian electricity grid through a substation to be built
by the state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) with a loan of 10
million dollars from the African Development Bank (ADB).

This clean energy project will require an investment of 146 million

euros. In addition to the €117.3 million loan from Danske Bank, the
Ethiopian government will also draw on a €28.7 million grant from the
Danida Business Fund (DBF), a fund administered by the Investment
Fund for Developing Countries on behalf of the government of
Denmark.

The project involves the installation of 29 turbines with each turbine

having the capacity to produce 3.45MW, the construction of access
roads, and a substation as well as the installation of transformers and
generators. Upon completion, the facility is expected to generate CLEAN ENERGY
about 330,000KWh annually and supply sustainable power to over

Nature Heals!
“Life is simple if we reflect upon nature and learn from it. People will
remain healthy if they live in harmony with the healing energies of Mother
Nature. The doctor of the future will hopefully be scientifically sound
while being intuitively alert to the signals of nature.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. Modern medical
science is marvelous but is limited by its focus on physical means and
methods of treatment. Methods imposed from outside whether they are
biochemical, mechanical or surgical, they drastically disrupt the body’s
self- regulatory functions and make it vulnerable to toxins and
debilitations. By focusing on relieving short-term symptoms, one ignores
the underlying root of the illness, which is exponentially detrimental to
curing of one’s illness. “ – Late Schree R.N. Kapoor
It’s very true that the simplest healing tools are the most powerful. It’s also
true that these are the ones that are most often overlooked. It should
be a priority to align ourselves with nature every single day — in how
we eat, how we move, and how we relax etc.

Nature is a very powerful healing agent. As much as possible we have to

eat simple healthy foods (whole-food plant-based) and hang out in
nature (by the sea or ocean, spend time with animals , exercise outside,
get out hands dirty, let our skin soak up the sun, walk through the fields,
through a rainforest, walk barefoot on the grass or sand etc.) as much as
possible.

Richard Louv, the author of “Last Child in the Woods” writes about the
importance of nature in the lives of children. He coined the term, “nature
deficit disorder”.

According to Richard Louv, “Nature deficit disorder describes the human

costs of alienation from nature, among them: diminished use of the
senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of physical and emotional
illnesses. The disorder can be detected in individuals, families, and
communities, nature deficit can even change human behavior in cities,
which could ultimately affect their design, since long-standing studies
show a relationship between the absence, or inaccessibility, of parks and
open space with high crime rates, depression, and other urban maladies.

Let me finish with few quotes:

"I felt my lungs inflate with the onrush of scenery—air, mountains, trees,
people. I thought, 'This is what it is to be happy.'" —Sylvia Plath, The Bell
Jar

"Not just beautiful, though—the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive
and breathing. And they're watching me." —Haruki Murakami, Kafka on

Travel out to Help Out!

With the feeling that perhaps Ethiopia is over the worst of the
pandemic, Ethiopia is now getting back to work. The State of
Emergency was not renewed in early September, Government
offices are gradually opening with different offices set to open over
the coming month, and the country is now opening for tourism.
However, it comes as no surprise that there are almost no
international tourists, band this does mean that the tourism
industry is on its knees. Guides, scouts, cooks, drivers and hotel
workers have often not had any source of income since mid March.
It is essential that these tourism workers begin to earn some
money. Ethiopia desperately needs its own people to support this
sector. This is the time for people living in Addis and the other cities
to Travel out to Help Out! And what a time to do it: all of the
tourism sites are empty. So you can visit and take your family to see
Lalibela, the Simiens, Gondar and the rest of Ethiopia's wonderful
heritage – without having a crowd of tourists around you.

Right now hotels and businesses are offering good packages as

they recognise the vital importance of getting some work through,
and keeping the whole supply chain going. Otherwise it will be
really hard to gear up when tourism does take off, and in the
meantime the personal suffering of individuals will be enormous.
So PLEASE consider head out of Addis for a long weekend, and
maybe in the December / January holidays travel out again. There
is so much to see, and in all tourist sites you will be welcomed
with open arms.

Coming soon – a sponsored bike ride to help guides, scouts, cooks

and others struggling with the lack of any tourism income.

By: Betselot Getabicha Dejene

In the summer of 2019, I was given the chance to attend the Yale
Young Global Scholars (YYGS) summer Program held annually
(June-July) in the Yale University campus in New Haven,
Connecticut. This is where I expanded my understanding of
international affairs and globalization and how to develop and
implement positive actions to counteract some worldwide issues.
During the two weeks, I met 169 people from 92 different
countries.

During the two-week-long program, I attended seminars and

lectures held by professors and post-graduate students from Yale
and other universities. The diversity in the sessions helped me learn
to look at things from different perspectives. Addressing problems
that world leaders are currently discussing, led me to understand
the power of proposing effective and feasible solutions. We
discussed current issues and their effects on today’s society and
how to channel them for good causes. I was also part of the
Ethnicity Race and Gender capstone group where my group
members and I chose to research Racial Democracy in Brazil.

Based on my audition, I was also selected to present in the YYGS

Speakers Series. This series follows the TED-talk format and was
attended by students in the International Affairs and Globalization
session and some of the program’s faculty. I gave a five-minute
speech titled The Evolution of Racism. While discussing topics that
matter today I made a lot of friends from all over the world. I am
sure the friendships I made are ones that will last forever.

The program includes different sessions; from politics, law and

economics to literature philosophy and culture. It is an excellent
chance for high schoolers to meet new people and add to their
experience while making friends from all over the world.

To learn more about the program visit the YYGS website.

Betselot Dejene was one of the founders of One Planet School's

Dinkinesh Club. “I helped plan and execute the D.R.O.P.S project”.
She wanted the chance to showcase her experience at the Yale
Young Global Scholars program because “I believe many students
can learn from my experience and be motivated to apply for the
next session”.

HONORING ONE CHILD’S CAMPAIGN
TO PROVIDE CLEAN WATER

In 2011 American child Rachel Beckwith tragically lost her life in a

car accident at the age of 9. She had recently donated her 9th
birthday to the charity Water skipping her party and birthday gifts –
so kids she’d never met could have clean water. She raised $220 –
enough to help seven people. But after her death, word of her selfless
less spread around the world and more than 31,000 strangers began
to donate $9 or more in her honor. Her $220 turned into more than
$1.2M funding 143 water projects in Tigray for 37,000 people. On the
one year anniversary of her death her parents and grandparents
came to Ethiopia to meet thousands of the men women and children
that now had clean water because of Rachel. But the story did not
end there. 408 of the 31,000 people that donated to Rachel’s
campaign followed her lead and ran fundraising campaigns of their
own. Five years later that group raised another $1.7M for clean water.
Rachels story touched and continues to touch hearts around the
world and has now impacted more than 100,000 lives. In a world
today seemingly full of so much hatred and violence, Rachel’s life
remains a beautiful reminder of the capacity we have to love and
serve each other.

Read all about how this amazing charity began and how it
continues to impact communities around the world including
Ethiopia with access to fresh water – a basic human right.

we have developed new thinking, which we call ‘Learning
Renewed’, which reimagines what more effective, equitable and
resilient education systems might look like, and how they might
better withstand future shocks.

We outline our vision for ‘flexible reopening’ of schools,

supplemented by community-based learning. Such new thinking
is necessary – not only due to the epidemiological risk of
Covid-19 transmission, which is heightened in low-income
contexts by large class sizes, poor sanitation and high levels of
inter-generational households, but also because a return to
‘normal’ will fail to solve the learning crisis that existed even
before the pandemic. Partly due to large class sizes and lecture-
style pedagogies, many children in low-income countries
complete primary education lacking even basic reading, writing
and arithmetic skills. We must therefore consider not only how
to reopen schools, but how to improve learning outcomes for
the children who attend them.

We therefore propose a ‘middle way’ between full closure and

full reopening, featuring smaller, tutorial-style classes attending
school on a part-time basis, supplemented by community-
based learning. This responds to a clear and urgent need to
reduce class sizes – enabling social distancing and helping to
ensure that pupils receive more direct feedback and guidance
than would be possible in the large, overcrowded classrooms

BRITISH BAKER PAYS HOMAGE
TO ETHIOPIAN COFFEE

The Great British Bake Off (popular British baking series) this
Season highlighted Ethiopian Coffee. Baker Mark paid homage to
Ethiopia with his Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony as part of Biscuit
Week creation!

Northern Irish Mark fell in love with baking at a pie shop in

Edinburgh – he visited every day while he was at university for the
shop’s delicious mac ’n’ cheese pie. Following that early inspiration,
he began to experiment: first attempting (and perfecting) a lemon
drizzle cake and eventually taking on multi-tiered wedding cakes,
each time looking at the science of the bake in order to perfect it.
His style is hugely influenced by his Irish heritage, but also by the
flavours of Africa and Asia, where he travels regularly for his work
as a project manager for public health research programmes. When
he isn’t baking, you can find Mark walking in the Lake District,
indulging his passion for wildlife, or with his wife, travelling and
exploring new places.
