 How It Works

The detector unit senses the presence of the electromagnetic field, radiated by the Signal Generator, that
has been applied to the pipeline. It guides the operator to the pipeline, calculates, records and displays the
strength of the remaining signal current on the line and the survey position (depth, latitude and longitude).

picture is built up rapidly of
how the dielectric
performance of the coating
compares over the entire
distance of target pipeline.

Types of defects that can be found

INCORRECTLY APPLIED MECHANICAL DAMAGE DECAY OF THE DISBONDING OF THE A LEAK IN THE PIPE
EXTERNAL COATING TO THE COATING, COATING DUE TO SOIL COATING FROM THE ITSELF, CAUSING THE
BEFORE, DURING OR CONDITIONS PIPE WRAP TO FAIL AT THE
AFTER INSTALLATION LEAK POINT.

Limitations

Soil needs to have a sufficient amount of moisture.

Nearby high voltage power lines can cause interference.

Need to have access to pipe at various locations to attach signal generator.

Minimum buried section of pipe should be at least 300 feet.

Neighboring pipelines could cause interference if not properly isolated.

Conductance
Conductance, in μS (micro Siemens) per square metr, is an absolute value of the ability of the coating to
pass current. Siemens is the reciprocal of resistance and is used in preference to ohms (resistance) as
specified in NACE TM0102-02. Although C-SCAN will display μS/m², μS/m or Ω/m² if required.

ScanTegrity conforms to the “AC Current attenuation survey” as specified in NACE RP0502.

The calculation relies on entering the following data:

Ground resistivity
Coating type (FBE, coal-tar etc) or the electrical characteristics of coating
Pipeline diameter
Pipeline wall thickness
NACE has laid down the limiting values of conductance, and are as follows:
Less than 100 μS/m2 Excellent coating
100uS to 500 μS/m2 Good to fair coating
500uS to 2000 μS/ m2 Fair to bad coating
Above 2000 μS/ m2 Bad to no coating—DIG RECOMENDATION
