Technical Note
Version: Version 2
Introduction
Mosaic is currently designing site sharing solutions utilising Same Band Passive Combiners.
There have been some issues thus far with installations and this technical note looks to
confirm the correct cabling and connections to be used for these combiner solutions.
At present, the same band combiner portfolio planned for site sharing between H3G, Meteor
and O2 sites are:

Technical note Radio Design RD0312 with Bias T
General
Depicted below is the circuit diagram of the RD0312 900/900 MHz combiner for H3G and O2 sharing
900 band ports. This unit was designed for another customer of RD who required a high band pass as
well as 900 combining of the same frequency blocks required for H3GI/O2 and DC by pass on the
high path but not on 900. So it is “off the shelf” per se.
Our requirement is to power 800/900 dual band TMAs in rural areas (not urban) using H3G Nokia
900 RBS. There is no requirement for the high port of the unit – RF port will be unused
Figure 1 Rd0312‐12 circuit diagram
As the 900 ports do not allow DC/AISG by pass it is necessary to extract the DC and AISG signal from
the 900 RBS cable and divert into the unused high port which will insert onto antenna feeder
(Common). This is done with a Bias T.
RF and DC/AISG
The diagram below depicts the RF and DC/AISG paths.

Issue with Bias T
Above layout is correct but unfortunately the Bias T provided (RD0305‐02) with the combiner unit
blocks DC/AISG on the side marked “BTS” (Capacitor) and instead extracts DC/AISG from the side
marked “ANT”.
Figure 3 Bias T RD0305‐02
Therefore connecting the male ANT end of Bias T onto combiner as below will not extract the
DC/AISG – will block it coming from BTS (capacitor in circuit)
Incorrect X
DC
route
Figure 4 Incorrect orientation of Bias T
The Bias T must be reversed compared to above and connected as per layout below with 7/16
adapters in line.
In addition the DC cable provided with bias T (TNC and 7/16 connector ends) is too short to reach
from 900 port to High port on rear of combiner and must be extended with a cable that has female
7/16 and male 7/16 either end
Figure 5 Correct orientation of Bias T
Interim solution
For an interim period male to male and female to female adapters will be needed for each combiner
(sector) plus a small extending cable for DC Bias T port cable which is insufficient length. A short
cable with female 7/16 and male 7/16 will be required to extend it to high port on rear of combiner.
Long term resolution of issue
Radio Design will provide new bias Ts that has correctly orientated connectors and an appropriate
length DC cable as per diagram below which was the intended solution.
