COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

Comparative adjectives
We use these adjectives to compare a quality between two people, animals or things. Let’s
see how to make comparisons in English:
1. If the adjective has 1 or 2 vowells we must add to them -Er which translates “Más”
in spanish, after the adjective We have to use the word “than” which is “Que”.

Example: She is taller than me (Ella es más alta que yo)

2. In case an adjective ends in a consonant with a vowell, you must double the
consonant and then add -Er.

Example: The elephan is bigger than the Lion (El elefante es más grande que el
León)

3. In case the adjective ends in -Y we exchange it for -ier.

Example: The Tuluá river is drier than the Morales river. (El rio Tuluá esta más
seco que el rio Morales)

4. If the adjective has more than 3 vowells (a long word) We must use the word
“More” instead of adding -Er at the end of the adjective.

Example: Your house is more beautiful than mine. (Tu casa es más bonita que la
mía)

5. There are 4 adjectives that are exclude from these rules because They are
irregular.

Good Better (Mejor)

Bad Worse (Peor)
Little Less (Menos)
Far Further/Farther (Más lejos)

Superlative adjectives
We use these adjectives to expose the quality of a person, animal or thing between a
group of many people, things or animals.

1. For these adjectives We apply the same rule than comparatives but insted of using
-Er We use -Est and here it is not necessary “than”, we could use “of”.

Example: She is the tallest of the class (Ella es la más alta de la clase)

2. The same case happens with an adjective that ends in consonant with vowell, we
double this one.

Example: He is the biggest of his house. (Él es el más grande de su casa)

3. The same case when it ends in -Y you Exchange it for -iest.

Example: This zone is the driest of the world (Esta es la zona más seca del
mundo)

4. In case the adjective has more than 3 vowells (Long word) We must use “The
most”.

5. With the irregular adjectives would change this way:

Good Best
Bad Worst
Little Least
Far furthest/Farthest
Example: My mother is the best teacher of whole world
