3-Year Professional Development and Action Plan

Year Action Item: Get involved in national work groups to learn about best practices in the field
 Professional development: Get involved in NASPA Excellence Awards review
1 committee for advising or wellness
 Professional development: Volunteer to assist at the regional NASPA and NACADA
conferences
 Professional development: Lead team of volunteers at either conference to ensure
success of our focus area
Action Item: Further develop understanding of civic engagement, as well as Social Justice
competency area of NASPA/ACPA standards
 Professional development: Attend NCORE (National Convention on Race and Ethnicity)
conference
 Professional development: Begin advocacy work at the state level for community
college student and community needs. And, learn more regarding state policy work
through informational interviews with professional network.
Action Item: Prioritize personal and professional goals to better support students and their
families and prioritize personal life-long learning
 Personal and professional development: Develop conversational Spanish speaking skills
through coursework
Year Action Item: Connect with State Board Policy Associate to identify ways to get involved in
statewide groups, such as Staff Training for Technical and Community Colleges (STTACC) and
2 others, to enhance my understanding of leadership and professional integrity
 Professional development: Take on leadership role in STTACC (chair, co-chair,
secretary, etc.)
Action Item: Enhance networking and facilitation skills at national level
 Professional development: Attend in-person national NASPA conference
 Professional development: Co-present at regional or national conference regarding
topic specific to advising or best practices.
Action Item: Take on leadership role in a formal position
 Professional development: Apply for position that leads a small team
Action Item: Emphasize opportunities for development in integrating technology and
leadership
 Professional development: Lead campus wide effort to implement new form of
technology to assist in outreach, onboarding or advising work to create efficiency and
sense of belonging for students as they enter the college
Year Action Item: Enhance understanding of global perspective in Student Affairs
 Professional development: Attend international NACADA conference
3 Action Item: Demonstrate professional integrity and enhance identity through various modes
of communication
 Professional development: Write article or publication regarding best practices in
community colleges
Action Item: Enhance competency in health and wellbeing
 Professional development: Complete graduate certificate from leaders in Higher
Education in areas, such as: counseling, health and wellness, conflict resolution, and
financial therapy
