5 OUTLINE OF OPERATION IN EACH MODE
5-1. Initial Operation
When the Sorter Set Switch (S3) is turned ON for the first time after the
Power Switch of the copier has been turned ON, the following operations are
performed in sequence. Note that the S-205 carries out only steps ➀ and ➄.
➀ Transport Section drive check (for details, see page M-17.)
➁ Paper Aligning Bar home position detection
(for details, see page M-25.)
➂ Paper Clamp Unit home position check
* When the Unit is not at the home position, home position detecting
operation is performed. (For details, see page M-38.)
➃ Stapler home position check
* When the Stapler is not at the home position, home position
detecting operation is performed. (For details, see page M-46.)
➄ Bin reference position detection (for details, see page M-31.)

5-2. Non-Sort Mode

Without being sorted or grouped, all copies are ejected onto the Non-Sort
Bin. Note that if the number of copies has exceeded the capacity of the Bin
(50 copies) and there are no copies in the Sort Bins (the 1st and subsequent
Bins), the Bins are moved to locate the next Bin at the copy receiving
position in sequence, i.e. 1st Bin, 2nd Bin.....

Example: When the number of copies set to be made is 80

5-3. Sort Mode
● Multiple copies made from each original are sorted and ejected into the
Sort Bins. At this time, the copies are sorted in two directions. Those
corresponding to the originals of odd pages are sorted in the direction
from the 1st to 20th Bins (the Bins move up) and those corresponding to
the originals of even pages are sorted in the direction from the 20th to 1st
Bins (the Bins move down).

Example: When 20 copies have been set to be made from each of 3 originals

● If 50 copies has been loaded in each of the corresponding Bins, the

"Remove all the copies from the Sorter bins" message is displayed and
copying is disabled. However, when the 11th and subsequent Bins are not
being used (the number of copies set to be made is 10 or less), the copier
does not display the above message and goes into the Auto Dual Mode.
In this mode, sorting is resumed from the 11th Bin and the operation
continues until the capacity of the Bin is exceeded again or copying ends.

Example: When 3 copies have been set to be made from each of 60 originals

M-8
● When the number of copies set to be made is 21 or more in the Sort
Mode, pressing the Start Key causes the total set number of copies to
change to "20" and the Sort Mode to be executed.
● If the copy paper size is larger than A4 (including the Mixed Original
Detection Mode), the feeding of the 600th copy paper causes the
"Remove all the copies from the Sorter bins" message to be displayed.
Note that if all the set number of copies has not yet been made from any
of the originals, the above message is displayed after all the set number
of copies has been made from that original.

Example: When 19 copies of B4 size have been set to be made from each of
33 originals

When the copying (19 copies) of the 32nd original is over,

"Remove all the copies from the Sorter bins" is displayed (the total
number of copies: 608).

5-5. Sort Staple Mode (ST-206 only)
● After copies made from each original are sorted and ejected into the Sort
Bins (ejected as in the Sort Mode), the copies loaded in the Bins are
stapled automatically.
● If put into the Auto Dual Mode during the copy operation, the copier
cancels stapling and goes into the Sort Mode.
● Stapling starts at the Bin which received the last copy. Since the stapling
position is one step higher than the copy receiving position, stapling starts
after the Bin which received the last copy is moved one step higher.

● If copying is started in the Sort Staple Mode, stapling is disabled (copy
cycle is performed) when:
➀ Copies are in the Bins at power-on;
➁ The copies stapled are left in the Bins;
➂ Sheets of paper have been inserted from outside the Sorter;
➃ There is only one copy in the Bin after the end of ejection;
➄ The copies ejected are different in crosswise length; or
➅ Copies made were not transferred to the stapling position due to
misclamping, etc. (Stapling of copies in the next Bin is started.)

5-6. Manual Staple Mode (ST-206 only)

In the Manual Staple Mode, either of the following operations may be
performed:
• At the end of copying in the Sort or Group Mode, press the Manual Staple
Key on the copier Control Panel to staple two or more copies ejected into
the Bin. (The stapling operation and stapling disable conditions are the
same as in the Sort Staple Mode.).
• When there are no copies made in the Bins, load sheets of paper into the
1st Bin from outside the Sorter and press the Manual Staple Key on the
copier Control Panel to staple the sheets of paper. At this time, paper
alignment is not made.

5-7. Hole Punch Mode (ST-206 only)
● A copy being transported in the Sorter is stopped instantaneously and
punched automatically before it is ejected into the corresponding Bin. The
Hole Punch Mode may be activated in any of the Finishing Modes
(Non-Sort, Sort, Group and Sort Staple).
* The transport of a copy is stopped so long as it does not affect the
copying speed of the copier.

5-8. Bin Movement after the End of Copying
If the 1st Bin is not in the copy receiving position at the end of copying, the
Bins are moved to locate the 1st Bin at the copy receiving position 2
seconds after the copies made have been removed from the Bins, thereby
preparing for the next copying operation. This Bin movement is performed
under "Bin Moving Control" (for details, see page M-31).

M-14
6 OPERATION OF EACH MECHANISM
6-1. Paper Transport Mechanism
● Paper Transport Path
A sheet of paper entering the Sorter from the copier is transported by the
Rollers driven by the Transport Motor (M5) and is ejected into the
corresponding Bin. At this time, the Punch Registration Sensor (PC11)
and Sort Exit Sensor (PC2) are unblocked ( H ) by the leading edge of
the paper in sequence, and blocked ( L ) when the trailing edge passes
them. The transport path of the paper remains the same as shown below
independent of the mode selected.

deenergized under the control of the output from IC1A-pin 3. M5 only
turns in one direction.
IC1A-5 M5
L Energized
H Deenergized

The speed of M5 is controlled by the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)

system. (In the PWM system, the width of a voltage pulse applied to the
motor is changed to control the motor speed.)

Also, the Transport Motor Pulse Sensor (PC9) is fitted to the pulse disc of
M5 to detect the motor speed according to the cycle of a pulse signal into
which the number of revolutions of the motor shaft has been converted.
The drive pulse applied to the motor is controlled in accordance with the
output signal from PC9 to keep the speed of M5 constant.

PC9

M5

● Timing of energizing/deenergizing M5
• When the scan of the first copy is started on the copier, M5 is energized.
• 380ms after the Sort Exit Sensor (PC2) is blocked ( L ) by the passage
of the trailing edge of the last sheet of paper, M5 is deenergized.

M-16
● Confirmation of Transport Section drive in the initial operation
When the Sorter Set Switch (S3) is turned ON for the first time after the
Power Switch of the copier has been turned ON, the Transport Motor (M5)
is run at a given speed for a given period of time to check the motor
speed according to the pulse output from the Transport Motor Pulse
Sensor (PC9). The checking operation differs between the S-205 and
ST-206 because of the absence/presence of the Punch Unit.

= S-205 =

M5 is energized by a given drive pulse (approx. 50% of the maximum

applied voltage).
In about 600ms
The motor speed ➀ is then checked for 100ms.∗
M5 is deenergized.

∗ If ➀ is less than the given value, malfunction detection code "C0b00" or

"C0b01" (page T-3) is displayed.

= ST-206 =

M5 is energized by a given drive pulse (approx. 50% of the maximum

applied voltage).
In about 600ms
The motor speed ➀ is then checked for 100ms and stored into memory∗.
The Punch Solenoid (SL2) is activated and the 100ms motor speed ➁ is
again checked and stored into memory.

In 150ms
M5 is deenergized. ➀ is compared with ➁∗∗.
∗ If ➀ is less than the given value, malfunction detection code "C0b00" or
"C0b01" (page T-3) is displayed.
** If the difference between ➀ and ➁ is more than the given value,
∗∗ malfunction detection code "C0b70" (page T-4) is displayed.

M-18
6-2. Punch Mechanism (ST-206 only)
● A copy being transported in the Sorter is stopped instantaneously and
punched by the Punch Unit.
● Paper transport stop mechanism
Causes the paper being transported to be instantaneously stopped at the
punching position.

Operation
A copy is transferred into the Sorter and its trailing edge passes the Punch
Registration Sensor (PC11).

The Punch Registration Clutch (CL1) is activated.

= When normally-closed CL1 is activated, the drive force of the Transport
Motor is not transmitted to the Clutch Rollers, stopping the transport of the
paper at the position of the Clutch Rollers. However, the trailing edge of
the paper is still transported by the Registration Rollers, causing the paper
to form a loop between the Registration Rollers and Clutch Rollers. When
the trailing edge of the paper leaves the nip of the Registration Rollers, the
strength of the paper itself and the elasticity of the loop cause the trailing
edge of the paper to be pressed against the nip of the Registration Rollers
and located at the punching position.

The Punch Unit punches the trailing edge of the paper.

CL1 is deactivated to transmit the drive force to the Clutch Rollers, thereby
transporting the paper and ejecting it into the corresponding Bin.

Note: For A3L or 11" × 17" size paper, its leading edge has already
passed the nip of the Exit Rollers when CL1 is activated. Hence, the
Torque Limiter is fitted to the Exit Roller Drive Gear to prevent the
Exit Rollers from idling.

● Paper Aligning Motor M3

Paper Aligning Motor M3 is a two-phase stepping motor. The output
pulses from pins 12 to 15 of IC1A are applied via IC9A and IC8A to M3 to
control the direction and distance of movement of the Paper Aligning Bar.
Each output pulse from IC1A turns M3 one angular increment, or a step,
which is 7.5°. This is equivalent in the movement of the Paper Aligning
Bar to approx. 0.3 mm. The number of output pulses from IC1A therefore
controls the distance of movement of the Paper Aligning Bar. The output
sequence of pulse signals (steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 or steps 4, 3, 2, and 1), on
the other hand, determines the direction of rotation of M3.

● The Non-Sort Bin and Sort Bins (1st to 20th Bins) are held by the grooves
of the Side Plate and the channels of the Spiral Cams. When the Bin

step up or down (depending on the direction of Spiral Cam rotation)
simultaneously along the channels of the Spiral Cams.

● Description of the Bin Moving Motor (M1)

A DC motor is used as the Bin Moving Motor (M1). The
energization/deenergization and rotation direction of M1 is under the
control of the outputs of IC1A-pins 5, 6 entered into the motor via IC9A.
IC1A-5 IC1A-6 Direction of M1 Rotation
L L Forward rotation (Bins move up)
L H Reverse rotation (Bins move down)
H — Stop

When M1 runs at maximum speed, the Bins oscillate greatly during

movement, making operating noise. Hence, the PWM system is used to
control the speed of M1 to reduce the oscillation and noise during Bin
movement. Also, containing a revolution detector, M1 outputs a pulse to
IC1A-pin 73 when the motor turns. IC1A detects the M1 speed according
to the cycle of the pulses entered.

M-29
● Bin Support Unit ..... Auxiliary Bin Moving Mechanism
As more copies are ejected onto the Bins, the load during the upward
movement of the Bins increases. To ensure that the Bins move smoothly
if the number of copies increases, the Auxiliary Bin Moving Mechanism
using a Recoil Spring is installed.

The upper end of the Recoil Spring is secured to the top of the Support
Unit and its lower end is hooked at the Gear. This Gear is coupled with
the Gear of the front Spiral Cam and is set to wind up the Recoil Spring
when the Spiral Cam turns counterclockwise (the Bins move down).
Therefore, when the Non-Sort Bin is in the copy receiving position, the
Recoil Spring is wound tightly. The recoil force of this tightly wound Recoil
Spring supports the load when the Bins move up.

Also, when the Bins move down (the Spiral Cam turns counterclockwise),
the recoil force of the Recoil Spring increases the movement load to
brake the Bins (especially when the number of copies is large).

● Bin Reference Position Detection
The reference position of the Bins is where the 1st Bin is located to
receive copies fed out of the copier. Movement of each Bin is controlled
with this position as the reference. The Bin reference position is detected
by Bin Positioning Sensor PC3 and Bin Lower Limit Position Sensor PC4.
PC3 is blocked ( L ) and unblocked ( H ) by a Light Blocking Plate which
turns in phase with the Spiral Cam. It is unblocked when any of the Bins is
located to receive the copy. PC4 is normally kept blocked ( L ) by a Light
Blocking Plate. However, when the Non-Sort Bin is located lower than the
level to receive the copy, the 20th Bin pushes the Light Blocking Plate,
which unblocks PC4 ( H ).

● Moving mechanism of the Paper Clamp Unit and Paper Aligning
Reference Plate
The Paper Clamp Unit and Paper Aligning Reference Plate are each held
by four rolls, which move under the guidance of the rails provided on the
Paper Clamp Frame. Also, the Paper Clamp Unit and Paper Aligning
Reference Plate are each fitted with the Cam Slider, which links with the
Paper Clamp Motor (M2) via the Cam. When M2 turns the Cams one turn:
• The Paper Clamp Unit moves from the home position to the clamping
position to the stapling position to the home position.
• The Paper Aligning Reference Plate moves from the home position to
the stapling position to the home position.

Because of the shapes of the corresponding Cam Sliders, the Paper

Clamp Unit keeps moving in time with the rotation of the Cam, but the
Paper Aligning Reference Plate remains still while the Cam moves
through area A of the Cam Slider (while the Paper Clamp Unit moves
from the home position to the clamping position).

● Detection of Paper Clamp Unit position
The home position of the Paper Clamp Unit is the midway point in the
movement of the Paper Clamp Unit from the stapling position to the
clamping position. This position is detected by the Paper Clamp Home
Position Sensor (PC7). PC7 detects the position when it is blocked ( L )
by portion A of the Paper Clamp Unit. However, since PC7 is also blocked
midway through the movement of the Paper Clamp Unit from the clamping
position to the stapling position, the Paper Clamp Positioning Sensor
(PC6) is used with PC7 to detect the home position. PC6 is blocked ( L )
and unblocked ( H ) by the semi-circular Blocking Plate which is
synchronized with the rotation of the Cam and detects the clamping
position and stapling position on the unblocked ( H ) edge and blocked
( L ) edge, respectively.

6-6. Paper Detection at Stapling Mechanism (ST-206 only)
In the beginning of a stapling sequence, the copy set in the Bin is moved to

stapling position because of a clamp failure or other reason, the stapling
action for that particular Bin is canceled and the sequence is started for the
stapling action for the next Bin.

● Moving Stapler Arm Pivot Axis
The lower limit position of the Stapler Arm varies depending on the

The pivot axis of the Arm is therefore made movable, thereby

compensating for the varying lower limit positions of the Arm depending
on the number of sheets of paper to be stapled together.

● Staple Sheet Empty Detection
Staple Empty Detecting Sensor PC10 is used to detect whether there is a
staple sheet or not in the Staple Cartridge. PC10 is a reflector-type
photosensor. When there is a staple sheet, the light from PC10 LED is
reflected by the staple sheet, turning ON the PC10 phototransistor. This
results in a LOW signal being input to pin 62 of IC1A. If there is no staple
sheet, the LED light is not reflected, which turns OFF the phototransistor.
At this time, a HIGH signal is input to pin 62 of IC1A and the Add Staple
Indicator lights up on the copier control panel.

• A staple-sheet-empty condition is detected when there are about 60

staples remaining in the Staple Cartridge.
• If a staple-sheet-empty condition is detected during a stapling action, that
particular stapling sequence is continued until it is completed. After the
sequence has been completed, the Add Staple Indicator lights up.
• Immediately after a new Staple Cartridge has been installed, the Stapler is
operated to complete four consecutive stapling sequences (it is stopped
when Stapler Home Position Detecting Switch S4 is actuated a fourth
time). This is done to prevent a "dummy run" (an operation of the Stapler
without actually driving a staple into the paper) immediately following the
replacement of the Cartridge.
