6 DESCRIPTION OF MODES
6-1. Mixed Original Mode
• When the Mixed Orig key on the copier control panel is pressed when the copier is
set in the 1-sided, 2-sided, or 2-in-1 mode, the AFR-10 detects the size of the
document each time a document is taken up and fed in. The copier feeds the copy
paper of a size selected from among the available paper sources according to the
document size detected.

◆ M1 Control
• M1 is energized and deenergized by the signal output from pin 11 of IC7 on
PWB-A.

• The U-Turn Roller receives drive also from Main Drive Motor M3. It turns
only when M3 turns forward (counterclockwise as viewed from the motor
output shaft) regardless of whether URCL is energized.
• The Front Document Separator Pad is affixed to the metal bracket in front
of the Document Separator Roller. If the Document Take-Up Rollers take
up and feed in two or more documents, the Front Document Separator Pad
and Document Separator Roller function together to ensure only the top
document is fed in.

<Speed Control>
• The M2 speed is detected by the pulse disk mounted on the motor output
shaft and Take-Up Motor Pulse Sensor M2CLK. The M2 pulses are
applied to pin 4 of IC4. The output from pin 9 of IC4 keeps the M2 speed
constant.

◆ SL3 Control
• In addition to controlling energization and deenergization of SL3, chopper
control is provided for the Solenoid. Chopper control refers to the
energization of the Solenoid with a small amount of power by applying a
voltage in a pulse form to it. This control method prevents the Solenoid
from becoming hot, thereby maintaining its initial performance.
• If chopper control is used from the very beginning to pull in the Plunger of
SL3, the Plunger would not be pulled in because of the small amount of
power. At first, therefore, DC24V is applied to the Solenoid to pull in the
Plunger and then control is switched to the chopper method.
M-14
7-5. U-Turn Roller Mechanism/Control
• The U-Turn Roller functions to feed the document, which has been taken
up by the Document Take-Up Rollers and fed by the Document Feed and
Separator Rollers, up to a point before the Document Transport Belt.
• Drive for the U-Turn Roller is transmitted from Take-Up Motor M2 when
U-Turn Roller Clutch URCL is energized.*1 U-Turn Roller Brake URBRK is
used to stop the U-Turn Roller, which enhances the stopping accuracy of
the U-Turn Roller.
• In front of the U-Turn Roller, a loop is formed in the document to prevent
any skewed feeding. To form a loop properly at this time, URBRK is
energized, thereby preventing the U-Turn Roller from starting to turn as the
document hits against it.
*1: The U-Turn Roller also receives drive from Main Drive Motor M3. (For
more details, see 8. DOCUMENT TRANSPORT MECHANISM.)
◆ URCL/URBRK Operation Timing
<When a loop is formed>
• URBRK is energized when the document reaches Registration Sensor S2P
and deenergized when document transport is begun.
<When the document is transported>
• URCL is energized 60 msec. after the loop has been formed in the
document and deenergized at the same time when URBRK is deenergized.
• URBRK is energized after five pulses of M2 have been detected during
inertia following deenergization of M2 and deenergized 30 msec. thereafter.
◆ URCL Control
• URCL is controlled as follows.
URCL IC13-17
Energized L
Deenergized H
◆ URBRK Control
• URBRK is controlled as follows.
* When URBRK is energized, current flows
URBRK IC13-19 through the coil in the brake and the armature
Energized L is attracted to the rotor by the induced
magnetic force. The friction between the
Deenergized H
armature and rotor at this time functions to
stop the rotation of the shaft.

TEST MODES
1 TEST MODES
• The test modes for the AFR-10 can be initiated from the "Tech. Rep. Mode Menu" screen provided
for the copier.
• Before running any of the test mode operations, check that the copier is free from a misfeed or
malfunction condition and none of the copier covers is left open.
4456U028CA
3. Touch the ADF Check key to enter the ADF Check/Setting mode.

S-1
◆ Conditions for Starting Each Test Mode Operation (Closure Failure)
• Some of the test mode operations do not start if a cover in the take-up or transport section of the
AFR-10 is left open. If any of the test operation is not activated, first check to see if a cover or two
are left open.
• The control panel indication identifies whether a disabled test mode operation is due to a closure
failure or actual component malfunction. Study the following.
* With "Paper Passage & Input Check," the same indication is given as for the closure failure when
documents are not loaded in position.

3. Load documents onto the Document Feed Table and press the Start key. This will start the paper
passage check in the operating mode selected and it will run until all documents are fed through
the AFR-10.
The press of the Start key while the check is being made interrupts the check. If the key is then
pressed again, the check will be resumed. The press of the Stop key will eject all documents out
of the AFR-10, terminating the test mode operation.

Paper Passage Check has been selected, the sensors can be checked for operation while
documents are fed through the AFR-10. It is also possible to check each individual sensor by
activating and deactivating it using paper or a finger with the necessary covers opened.
• Whether a particular sensor is activated or deactivated is indicated by "0" or "1." A "1" is shown if
paper is present at a sensor along the paper path. Pick-Up Home Position Sensor PHPS is at its
home position when a "1" is shown.

DIS/REASSEMBLY,
ADJUSTMENT
1. Before attempting to disassemble the AFR-10, always make sure that no power is
being supplied from the copier.
2. While power is being supplied to the AFR-10, do not attempt to remove/install the
print jacks from/to the PWBs or unplug/plug in the connectors.
3. If the AFR-10 is run with its covers removed, use care not to allow your clothing
to be caught in revolving parts such as the timing belt.
4. The basic rule is do not run the AFR-10 any time during dis/reassembly.
5. A toothed washer is used with the screw that secures the ground wire to ensure
positive conduction. Do not forget to insert this washer at reassembly.
6. To reassemble the AFR-10, reverse the order of disassembly unless otherwise
specified.
7. Do not attempt to loosen or remove the screw to which red paint has been
applied.
8. The screws to which blue paint has been applied indicate that adjustments are
necessary once loosened or removed.

Requirement: The Turnover/Exit Switching Plate should be in contact
with the Exit Misfeed Removal Guide Plate.
1. Remove the Document Feed Section Cover and
Upper Cover.
2. Loosen the screw that secures the SL2 bracket.
2-12. Adjustment of Gap in U-Turn Roller Brake URBRK and Main Drive
Motor Brake M3BRK
Requirement: The gap between the rotor and armature of the brake
should be 0.2 ±0.15 mm.
1. Remove the Document Feed Section Cover and
Upper Cover.
2. Loosen two set screws that secure the armature.
D-17
2-13. Adjustment of Motor Speed
Requirement: The Multi-Copy Display on the Touch Panel should show
a "0."
Separating Pressure
Adjusting Plate
• If double feeding tends to occur, slide the Separating Pressure Adjusting Plate towards A.
• If skewed feeding tends to occur with thin paper, slide the Separating Pressure Adjusting
Plate towards B.
[Since the plate has been factory adjusted to the reference position, keep the sliding
distance within three graduations whenever feasible or transport failure could result.]

TROUBLESHOOTING
General Precautions
1. When servicing the AFR-10 with its covers removed, use utmost care to
prevent your hands, clothing and tools from being caught in revolving parts.
2. Before attempting to replace parts and unplugging connectors, make sure that
no power is being supplied from the copier.
3. Terminals and PWB patterns other than connectors specified in the text must
not be shorted.
4. When creating a closed circuit and measuring a voltage across connector pins
specified in the text, be sure to use the green wire (GND).
5. Keep all disassembled parts in good order and keep tools under control so that
none will be lost or damaged.
