6 DESCRIPTION OF MODES
6-1. Mixed Original Mode
• When the Mixed Orig key on the copier control panel is pressed when the copier is
set in the 1-sided, 2-sided, or 2-in-1 mode, the AFR-10 detects the size of the
document each time a document is taken up and fed in. The copier feeds the copy
paper of a size selected from among the available paper sources according to the
document size detected.

6-2. 1-Sided Original Mode

• When in this mode, the AFR-10 detects the size of the document which is taken up
and fed in first.
• The copier therefore needs to determine the size of the copy paper only once based
on the detected document size and the copying setting made on the control panel.
This makes for faster paper feed timing on the part of the copier.
Note:
If a set of documents of varying sizes are used in this mode, image trouble could
result including void image. (The system does not force a misfeed condition.)

6-3. 2-Sided Mode

• The AFR-10 automatically turns over the 2-sided document for a speedy copying
operation (copies are made in the order of the first and second page).

6-4. 2-in-1 Mode

• When in this mode, the AFR-10 positions two different documents on the Original
Glass side-by-side for the making a copy of the two documents onto one side of a
single sheet of paper in a single copy run.
• If this mode is to be used for a set of documents of different widths, the Mixed Orig
key must first be pressed.

6-5. Auto Count Mode

• When the Auto Count key on the copier control panel is pressed when the copier is
set in the Cover or Page Insertion mode, the AFR-10 automatically counts the
number of documents loaded in it. (No misfeed condition is detected even if the
document set is of assorted sizes.)

6-6. S-ADF (Single Feed) Mode

• When a single document is placed on the Document Feed Table, the AFR-10
automatically takes it up and feed it in to let the copier run a single copy cycle.
• The document is fed through the AFR-10 at a low speed as in the Thin mode to
prevent an excessive load from being applied to the document. In addition, the
document separating pressure is reduced at the time of document take-up.
Note:
The AFR-10 automatically takes up and feeds in documents even when two or more
documents are placed on the Document Feed Table; however, it could result in a
double feed or other faulty condition. Only one document should therefore be loaded.

6-7. Thin Mode (As set by "Original Thickness" of User’s Mode)

• When in this mode, the AFR-10 transports the document at a low speed and stops it
without letting it hit against the Original Width Scale (except for B5 lengthwise and
A4 crosswise).

• The document pick-up mechanism consists of the Document Stopper

Plates and Document Take-Up Rollers. The Document Stopper Plates
determine the leading edge position of the documents loaded in the
AFR-10. They are normally in the lowered position and, at the start of the
pick-up motion, are swung up out of the way of the documents.
• The Document Take-Up Rollers function to take up the top document and
feed it up to the Document Feed and Separator Rollers. They are normally
in the raised position and, at the start of the pick-up motion, lowered to be
pressed tightly against the documents by the Document Pressure Springs.
• Pick-Up Motor M1 gives drive to press the Document Take-Up Rollers
tightly up against the document and, at the same time, to swing up the
Document Stopper Plates out of the way of the documents.

• The document take-up mechanism functions to take up the top document

from a set of documents loaded on the Document Feed Table and feed it
up to Timing Sensor S3P. Its drive comes from Take-Up Motor M2 via
U-Turn Roller Clutch URCL.
• Take-Up Motor M2 rotates the Document Take-Up Rollers, Document Feed
Roller, and Document Separator Roller via Gears, Pulleys, and Timing Belt.
Its drive is also transmitted to the U-Turn Roller when U-Turn Roller Clutch
URCL is energized.

M-11
• The U-Turn Roller receives drive also from Main Drive Motor M3. It turns
only when M3 turns forward (counterclockwise as viewed from the motor
output shaft) regardless of whether URCL is energized.
• The Front Document Separator Pad is affixed to the metal bracket in front
of the Document Separator Roller. If the Document Take-Up Rollers take
up and feed in two or more documents, the Front Document Separator Pad
and Document Separator Roller function together to ensure only the top
document is fed in.

◆ Take-Up Motor M2 Control

<Energization and Deenergization Control>
• M2 is energized and deenergized by the signal output from pin 16 of IC7.

M2 IC7-16
Energized L

<Speed Control>
• The M2 speed is detected by the pulse disk mounted on the motor output
shaft and Take-Up Motor Pulse Sensor M2CLK. The M2 pulses are
applied to pin 4 of IC4. The output from pin 9 of IC4 keeps the M2 speed
constant.

<Detection of Distance of Document Feed>

• M2CLK functions not only to stabilize the M2 speed, but also to detect the
distance (length) of document feed.
(For more details, see "10-1. Document Size Detection.")

Solenoid SL3
Spring A
4456M001AA

• This mechanism reduces the pressure exerted by the Document Separator

Roller on the document as the document is pinched between, and pulled
by, the U-Turn Roller and Rolls. This is done to lighten the load applied to
the U-Turn Roller and to prevent the document from being dirtied or
skewed by the pressure between the Document Feed and Separator
Rollers.
• Document Separator Solenoid SL3 is used to reduce the separating
pressure.

M-13
◆ SL3 Control
• In addition to controlling energization and deenergization of SL3, chopper
control is provided for the Solenoid. Chopper control refers to the
energization of the Solenoid with a small amount of power by applying a
voltage in a pulse form to it. This control method prevents the Solenoid
from becoming hot, thereby maintaining its initial performance.
• If chopper control is used from the very beginning to pull in the Plunger of
SL3, the Plunger would not be pulled in because of the small amount of
power. At first, therefore, DC24V is applied to the Solenoid to pull in the
Plunger and then control is switched to the chopper method.

M-14
7-5. U-Turn Roller Mechanism/Control

• The U-Turn Roller functions to feed the document, which has been taken
up by the Document Take-Up Rollers and fed by the Document Feed and
Separator Rollers, up to a point before the Document Transport Belt.
• Drive for the U-Turn Roller is transmitted from Take-Up Motor M2 when
U-Turn Roller Clutch URCL is energized.*1 U-Turn Roller Brake URBRK is
used to stop the U-Turn Roller, which enhances the stopping accuracy of
the U-Turn Roller.
• In front of the U-Turn Roller, a loop is formed in the document to prevent
any skewed feeding. To form a loop properly at this time, URBRK is
energized, thereby preventing the U-Turn Roller from starting to turn as the
document hits against it.
*1: The U-Turn Roller also receives drive from Main Drive Motor M3. (For
more details, see 8. DOCUMENT TRANSPORT MECHANISM.)
◆ URCL/URBRK Operation Timing
<When a loop is formed>
• URBRK is energized when the document reaches Registration Sensor S2P
and deenergized when document transport is begun.
<When the document is transported>
• URCL is energized 60 msec. after the loop has been formed in the
document and deenergized at the same time when URBRK is deenergized.
• URBRK is energized after five pulses of M2 have been detected during
inertia following deenergization of M2 and deenergized 30 msec. thereafter.

◆ URCL Control
• URCL is controlled as follows.

URCL IC13-17
Energized L
Deenergized H

◆ URBRK Control
• URBRK is controlled as follows.
* When URBRK is energized, current flows
URBRK IC13-19 through the coil in the brake and the armature
Energized L is attracted to the rotor by the induced
magnetic force. The friction between the
Deenergized H
armature and rotor at this time functions to
stop the rotation of the shaft.

prevent your hands, clothing and tools from being caught in revolving parts.
2. Before attempting to replace parts and unplugging connectors, make sure that
no power is being supplied from the copier.
3. Terminals and PWB patterns other than connectors specified in the text must
not be shorted.
4. When creating a closed circuit and measuring a voltage across connector pins
specified in the text, be sure to use the green wire (GND).
5. Keep all disassembled parts in good order and keep tools under control so that
none will be lost or damaged.

Reading the Text

1. If a component on a PWB or any other functional unit including a motor is
defective, the text only instructs you to replace the whole PWB or functional
unit and does not give troubleshooting procedure applicable within the
defective unit.
2. The text assumes that there are no breaks and shorts in the harnesses and all
connectors are plugged into the right positions.
3. The text basically provides for malfunctions that occur due to defective parts
and does not deal with faults caused by external noises, etc.
