RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Sep 2008–Present

Thermal Energy Project
Lehigh University and U.S. Department of Energy
 Built a bench-scale drop calorimeter with an accuracy of 2% working for large sample sizes up to 300
grams and temperatures up to 850 °C, and used the calorimeter to select 4 encapsulated phase change
materials (EPCMs) for thermal energy storage system.
Give your class  Designed and tested a novel 5 kW pilot-scale thermal energy storage system with the characterized
projects names EPCMs, and measured energy storage and retrieval at elevated temperatures up to 550 °C with an
and bullet-point accuracy of 5%, thus realized the applications of latent heat storage method in pilot-scale thermal
energy storage system.
descriptions
 Developed a process model for simulation of a thermal energy storage system, optimized designs of
test unit to obtain 5 kW power deposit with available 80 SCFM, 550 °C house air, and numerically
predicted experimental results with less than a 2% discrepancy.
 Extended the simulation model to evaluate and design a 100 MW thermal energy storage system
using latent heat storage method at high temperatures up to 850 °C for application to a 24-hour solar
power plant.

Energy Storage System Project

Lehigh University and Sandia National Laboratories
 Designed a thermal energy storage system in a liquid test loop to provide 2 hours of full generating
capacity of 25 kW, and reduce thermal energy storage cost from $25/kWhth to less than $15/kWhth

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Department of Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University Feb 2008–May 2008
 Prepared three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) Pt/TiO2, and evaluated the performances
of Pt/TiO2 catalyst on improving CO conversion in water gas shift reaction (WGSR) under different
preparation conditions and reaction conditions
 Obtained a stable 65% CO conversion in water gas shift reaction with Pt/TiO2 at the reaction
temperature range of 180°C-360 °C through analyzing the effects of sintering temperature for TiO2
substrate, loading amount of Pt and reduction temperature of reaction.
