COFFEE IN KENYA

Kenya is a small country located in East Africa


It is one of the top 20 coffee producers in the world and 5th in Africa
Coffee was introduced in Kenya from Brazil by French missionaries in 1893
In 1895 Kenya became a British colony and the production of coffee was advanced to large scale
mainly for export by the colonialists
Coffee does well in Kenya because of the equatorial climate and fertile soils
The main varieties of coffee grown in Kenya are Arabica and Robusta
Annual production is up to 51,000 tones
Consumption of coffee is not very popular because it was forbidden in the colonial times as it
was just for export and for this reason tea is a more popular beverage
