Süleymaniye Mosque
Raya Sulaimaniah Camii
Suleymaniye Mosque is the second largest mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. It was
completed in 1557 after it was built for 7 years by Mimar Sinan on the orders of Sultan
Sulaiman al-Qanuni. Designed as a complex of religious buildings and social activities.
From its architecture, the building of this mosque showed a combinations of Islamic
and Byzantine elements of architecture. It has a great dome surrounded by half domes much
like Hagia Shopia, Byzantine heritage. The great dome has a diameter of 27,5 meters and a
height of 53 meters. The domes is meant to absorb and reflect sound of khatib, so no need a
microphone. The main hall walls are lined with marble that comes from the Marabou Region,
Balkan Peninsula, and Yemen. Having 138 windows with clear glass allows sunlight to light
up a room in the mosque. Suleymaniye Mosque looks beautiful with 4 skinny towers that
stand 50 meters tall covered with marble of high artistic value. 4 towers indicates that Sultan
Sulaiman was the fourth sultan to rule the city.
