Anand patwardhan is an award-winning documentary filmaker who has been making
political documentaries for over four decades pursuing diverse and complex issues that
are at the crux of social and political life in India. Many of his films were at one time or

Mezzaterra: Conversations Sans Borders

In her work Mezzaterra: Fragments from the Common Ground (2004), Ahdaf Souief envisions
Mezzaterra as a ‘common ground’, a ‘meeting point’, a ‘middle ground’, ‘an area of overlap’ -- a space
where cultures, languages, and people from varying socio-political backgrounds, ideological and
identity positions, and belief systems come together to shade each other, inspire and create depth and
perspectives (7-8). Taking inspiration from this vision of a space for polyphonic conversations, the
department of English and Cultural Studies at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bannerghatta Road
Campus presents Mezzaterra, a series of talks and discussions.
Adhering to Soueif’s term in letter and spirit, our webinar/seminar series aims to be a common meeting
ground not just for people but for ideas in creative flux, to be reimagined, reshaped, and redeployed in
the face of changing realities that are emerging, and will continue to emerge, as we find ourselves in an
unprecedented moment and unfamiliar landscape. This webinar series is not limited by constraints of
theme and space; a common belief in the need for open conversation weaves the talks together across
disciplinary boundaries.
