Evaluate the currently available design support in the form of reference design kits, evaluation

boards, or other resources for the design of variable speed induction motor drives. Your report
should cover the Power Electronics hardware as well as the hardware & software for the digital
control. Survey the available support for the design of V/Hz and Field Oriented Control (Vector)
drives. For Vector drives look at the support for speed-sensorless implementations. Evaluate the
available software development and programming tools. Properly reference the sources of all
information!

(a) Write a paper (about 10 pages with embedded graphics) and cite all references.

(b) Summarize your findings on the available level of design support including the
sources.

(c) Elaborate on the performance level for the typical vector control operations (Vector
rotation (Park), 3-Phase – 2-Phase (Clarke)) transformations in the supported
hardware/software platforms. For example, digital controllers that have built-in
hardware support for these operations would typically outperform software
implementations.

(d) ECE 5391 only: Evaluate the current state of the art of electric machines for hybrid
electric and fully electric automobiles. In particular document the following facts:

• Make & Model of Car

• Type of Drive (Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric)
• Batteries used (Type & Capacity)
• Electric range
• Type of machine: (Brushless DC, Induction, others)
• Type of cooling (Liquid?)
• Power Density (kW/liter, kW/weight) • Type of Power Electronics (Si, SiC)

All work must be clearly identifiable as individual work!

All text must be original writing. Copying text from any source without proper
indication of quotation will result in a score of zero on the final. (Example Quotation: Patent
x,xxx, xxx claims that: “The preferred embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1…. ”).
Quotations should be minimal and only used where absolutely necessary (Legal language,
Patent claims, Data Sheet statements etc.) Copying and altering text is considered copying
without altering the text. All figures must be referenced indicating the source. This exam has
never been assigned in this form.
