CONCEPTS OF THE COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY is a group of people who:


- Common interest or characteristics
- Interact with one another
- Function collectively within a defined social structure to address common concerns
- defined as a set of meaningful social connections in a group of any size where members have something in
common.

A. Types of Communities
1. Phenomenological – functional; activity or belief based e.g. school
2. Geopolitical – territorial; locality based having geographic boundaries e.g. barangay

B. Characteristics of a healthy community – geared towards increase control and improve health
1. Shared feeling of belongingness as a community
2. A general feeling of empowerment and control over matters that affect the community
3. Have an organizational structure that allows subgroups to participate in decision making
4. The ability to cope with change , solve problems and manage conflicts
5. Have open channels of communication
6. Members have equitable and efficient use of community resources

D. Factors Affecting the Health of the Community


1. Characteristics of the Population–size, density, composition, rate of growth, mobility, social class and educational level
2. Location of the Community– natural and man-made variables
3. Social Systems within the community – family, economy, education, communication, politics, legal religious,
recreation and health systems

E. Roles and Activities of a Community Health Nurse


1. Advocate – nurse seeks to promote understanding of health problems
2. Care Manager – helps in making decisions about appropriate health care services
3. Case finder – looks for client at risk
4. Counselor – assists and supports client in solving problems
5. Clinic nurse – delivers health care services to meet the needs of ones at risk
6. Epidemiologist – uses epidemiological methods to study health and illness; monitoring and surveillance
7. Team leader – collaborates and works with groups in practice
8. Health planner provides health programs for the community
9. Home visitor – gathers information how a family function
10. Occupational health nurse
11. Researcher assists healthcare professional reach their goal through research
