The sandwich generation facing a lot of challenges to make end needs and caregiving for two
generation people. The challenges could make them burnout since they kept playing multiple roles
time to time and handling their career which is more important since everything cost money. Thus,
the sandwich generation can take up few ways to make the transition easier such as a better financial
plan, dealing with emotions and ask for help.
Firstly, a better financial plan would help for make the transition easier. This is because, money is
the main crisis for sandwich generation where they have to fulfill many needs likes, needs of child,
needs of parents, needs of career, and also self-needs. So, when the sandwich generation has better
financial plan then they can make the living easier. For example, based on Dresden, Rumrill Jr,
Wickert, and MRC (2013), the financial aids like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security,
and Veteran’s benefits are the most worth to consider options in order to secure
some expenses for ageing parents. Meanwhile, buying long-term care insurance are
financially much helpful for the elders in family where sandwich generation does not
have to worry much about the healthcare expenses. This would make the transition
easier as the financial is less headache now for the sandwich generation.
Next, the dealing with emotions is another way to make the transition better.
When a person is emotionally messed, the person tend to react more sensitive which
could even make others feel bad. The relationship with sandwich generation and
their kids and parents would be affected which make the transition harder. The
psychological wellbeing should be given enough attention. Bertini (2011) also has
stated that the emotional support from sibling or closed one would help the primary
caregiver to deal with the sandwiched situations. Sharing the burden of being
sandwich generation to others would greatly help the person to make the transition
better. Rosenzweig (2009) also mentioned that it is never too late to build a better
process to handle the emotions and also to seek emotional support from others
sometimes, from own children. When a person is with good psychological health, the
person can do more well in life. Thus, the dealing with emotions does help the
transition to be easier.
Lastly, the asking for help would be another way of making transition easier. The
sandwich generation should feel free to ask more help from others in order to not
feel so pressed down. For example, being caregiver for parent with Alzheimer’s
disease would need more help from others, where physical therapist Shilpa Krishnan
stated that the it is okay to seek for help for various kind like as a chef, personal
assistance, or as medical assistance (DiGiulio, 2019). Eliopoulos (2010) has also
stated that the caregivers should not exceed the reality limit of their works. They
should not overwork themselves and seek for assistance from the family,
government or private sectors. This would help them to not feel burnout from all the
hassles they going through in this sandwich generation. When they seek help, all the
people can work together and can provide better for the kids and ageing parents.
