Dear group mates, I’d like to speak on the topic “International English exams”.

In
my topic I’m going to highlight the following points. Firstly, I’d like to tell you
about the role of the English language in the contemporary world, then I will dwell
upon the language proficiency and finally I will focus on the IELTS and TOEFL:
test types, exam sections and scoring systems.

Do you know that English is considered the most commonly used language? More
than 450 million people consider him a native. Another 600-650 million citizens
use English as an additional language for communication. It is considered in
demand in many countries of the world. Knowledge of the vocabulary and
grammar of this language is extremely necessary in order to study abroad.

Firstly, I’d like to draw your attention to the fact, that English is the official
language of 67 countries. For example ( Australia, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica,
Malta, Kenya, New Zealand, Singapore, Wales, UK, Zimbabwe…) The importance
of the English language in the modern world today is quite large. Most recently, it
was a foreign language for us, and today it is an international one. Therefore, now
in all countries of the world English betrays great importance. Today children
begin to study it at a preschool age.English is one of six official languages in the
United Nations. It is the language of politics, economics, science and modern
technologies. 75% (per cent) of all international business letters are written in
English. Nearly 50 % (per cent) of the companies communicate with each other in
English. 80 % (per cent) of all information in the world’s computers is in English.
So, we learn English because with it we can make out our own way in the world.
Learning English is number one in our everyday life activities though it is not an
easy thing to do.

Secondly, I will tell you about the language proficiency. As you know, there are
five reference English levels widely accepted as the global standard for grading an
individual’s language proficiency. (A1 (Beginner); A2 (Elementary English);
B1 (Intermediate English); B2 (Upper-Intermediate); C1 (Advanced English);
Proficiency in English is usually defined by a combination of skills: reading,
writing, listening, and speaking. These are measured by standardized and
internationally recognized tests, such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign
Language) or the IELTS ( International English Testing System), which are usually
marked on a band score.
Finally, I’ll focus on the IELTS and TOEFL. Let’s look at their test types, exam
sections and scoring systems.

The TOEFL formally known as Test Of English as a Foreign Language, is a test of

an individual's ability to use and understand English in an academic setting. There
are four sections – listening, reading, speaking and writing . The TOEFL test is
scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points. Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening,
Speaking, and Writing) receives a scaled score from 0 to 30. The scaled scores
from the four sections are added together to determine the total score.

IELTS /ˈaɪelts/ (the International English Language Testing System) is the world’s
most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global
migration. IELTS uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English
communication skills. Test takers can choose from two versions of the test –
IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training – depending on the organisation you
are applying to and your plans for the future (higher education or work). Both
versions of the test are made up of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and
Speaking. Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 1 to 9. So, Taking an
English test like TOEFL or IELTS exam can be a great way to see what level your
English is at. It can also be a useful or necessary way to prove your level of
English for work, study or citizenship for some countries.

In conclusion, I’d like to mention that International exams are rather popular these
days. Almost any teen or adult can take part in these exams. They are
internationally recognized exams, which test your knowledge in different areas.
They discipline people and teach them to work and study regularly.
