Hii! Do you have any tips on dealing with Kant's writing?

Have you read the whole

COPR? Ripping my hair out ...

wine.

No, but seriously I took one course just on the Critique of Pure Reason, one that
included part of the Critique of Practical Reason,
and now in a course I have just finished the Critique of Judgement.

AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHY, I HATE KANT BUT I HAVE READ ALL OF KANT AND I KNOW HIM SO
WELL!!!!

This is my method for Kant: I read it and I write notes as I go. Just keep writing
notes,
and if you get stuck you have to go to secondaries. There is one by Norman Kemp
Smith
(he also does a translation that used to be the standard, now I think it is the
Guyer)
it is disgustingly large so I wouldnt recommend reading it cover to cover but he
explains EVERYTHING like line by line
so if you are stuck, look it up in there. There is also a Routledge book by
Sebastian Gardner which is helpful;
it is shorter and more readable.

I also in 2/3 of my courses on Kant have been quizzed on material BEFORE IT WAS
TAUGHT (which is insane in the first place but utterly insane for KANT). So I had
to basically teach, particularly the Critique of Pure Reason (i.e. the hardest
one!!!), to myself. You just have to force yourself through and eventually it
starts to stick

It takes a bit of practice to get into his style and not to die while reading, but
after a while you get into it. But yea, you might have a stroke before that
happens. I think I did. Seriously the Pure Reason course basically gave me an
ulcer.

I find that a lot of people read Kant but without really reading Kant and they
only get a v superficial reading, so stick with it. Even if Kant isnt your area, he
is such an important figure to have. Ex: I dont do Kant, I do Neoplatonism but I
needed to write a section on the Hegelian reading of one of my figures (Scotus
Eriugena) and I could NOT have understood Hegel and Schiller and friends if I
didnt know Kant Just keep your goals in mind and keep writing notes as you read
(with his little title things that helps to keep those in mind).

Also, if you read German, it is EASIER to read in German than in English idk why.
He is actually rather clear in German and a mess in translation haha

Good luck! If you have any questions, PLEASE message me. I know how the Critiques
feelwe should make a support group.
