Answers
(1) 10 km

Step 1
From given picture we can see that,
Distance between Donald's house and stadium = Distance between house and hospital + Distance
between hospital and church + Distance between church and bus station + Distance between bus
station and chemist + Distance between chemist and stadium

Step 2
Distance between Donald's house and stadium = 6 km 800 m + 7 km 600 m + Distance between
church and bus station + 6 km 400 m + 5 km 900 m

Step 3
Distance between Donald's house and stadium = Distance between church and bus station + 26
km 700 m

Step 4
Therefore, Distance between church and bus station = Distance between Donald's house and
stadium − 26 km 700 m
= 36 km 700 m − 26 km 700 m
= 10 km

(2) Sunday

Step 1
It is given that today is Saturday. Therefore, the day after tomorrow will be Monday.

Step 2
As, my sister's birthday is on Monday, Christmas will also be on Monday (the next Monday).

Step 3
Therefore, the day before Christmas will be Sunday.

(3) 131

Step 1
According to the question, a college has a teacher for every 137 students.
Total number of students = 8631
Number of students per teacher = 137
Total number of students
Number of teachers =
Number of students per teacher
8631
=
137
= 63

Step 2
Number of students who joined the college = 45
Number of students who left the college = 161
The total number of students in the college at present = Total number of students in the previous
year - Number of students who left the college + Number of students who joined the college
= 8631 - 161 + 45
= 8515

Step 3
Number of teachers who joined the college = 10
Number of teachers who left the college = 8
The total number of teachers in the college at present = Total number of teachers in the previous
year - Number of teachers who left the college + Number of teachers who joined the college
= 63 - 8 + 10
= 65

Step 4
Now, total number of students in the college = 8515
Total number of teachers in the college = 65
Total number of students in the college
Number of students per teacher =
Total number of teachers in the college
8515
=
65
= 131

Step 5
Therefore, the number of students per teacher this year are 131.

(4) 9

Step 1
Let us write all pairs of input and output numbers,
6⇒2
9⇒3
18 ⇒ 6

Step 2
If we observe these numbers, we can see that the output number is equal to input number divided
by 3.

Step 3
Same pattern should be followed when number 27 goes in, therefore output number,
= 27 ÷ 3
=9

(5) 48 m

Step 1
Since an electric pole is there at every 6 m, it will be present at every multiple of 6.

Step 2
Similarly, a telegraph pole is there at every 48 m. It will thus be present at every multiple of 48.

Step 3
Now, the distance at which both types of poles will be present again, should be a multiple of both 6
and 48. Therefore, we need to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of 6 and 48 in order to find
such a distance.

Step 4
LCM of 6 and 48 = 48 m

Step 5
Therefore, both types of poles will be together again after a distance of 48 m.

(6) 1040

Step 1
The ratio of the stamps collected by Paul and David at the end of the month is 26:33. Let the
number of total stamps collected by Paul and David by the end of the month be 26x and 33x,
respectively.

Step 2
Now, the additional stamps collected by David in one day = 320
This means, the new number of David's stamps = 33x + 320

Step 3
On equating new ratios:
26x 26
=
33x + 320 41
26x 26
⇒ =
33x + 320 41
x 1
⇒ =
33x + 320 41
⇒ 41x = 33x + 320
⇒ 41x - 33x = 320
⇒ (41 - 33)x = 320
⇒ 8x = 320
320
⇒x=
8
⇒ x = 40

Step 4
Stamps collected by Paul = 26x = 26 × 40 = 1040

Step 5
Therefore, the total number of stamps collected by Paul is 1040.

(7) 105

Step 1
We know the following from the question
- Both SUN and BRU are 3 digit numbers.
- The middle digit of the first one is the last digit of the 2nd one. The other digits are different from
each other.
- Also, 6 × SUN = BRU

Step 2
Now we need to apply logic to see if we can solve it. Let's see what we can figure out.

Step 3
Hmm...'S' cannot be more than 1, because if it was then 6 × SUN would be a 4 digit number i.e.
Copyright 2017 www.edugain.com Personal use only. Commercial use is strictly prohibited.
ID : au-5-Olympiad [8]
even the smallest value of SUN in that case would be 200, and 200 × 6 = 1200, which is a 4 digit
number.
So, S = 1

Step 4
For the same reason U cannot be more than 6. (As, 170 × 6 = 1020 is a 4 digit number)

Step 5
Now think about N. Can it be even?
No - it cannot be. Why?

6 multiplied by any even number results in the same last digit (6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36
and so on). But we know that the last digits of SUN and BRU are different.

So N is odd. It can't be 1 though, because S=1. (The value of S and X cannot be same.)
So N either is 3,5,7 or 9.

It cannot be 3, because 3 × 6 = 18. This means U is 8, and we already know U is not greater than
6.

Now it's just a matter of elimination.

Step 6
The possibilities are
N = 5 and U = 0
N = 7 and U = 2
N = 9 and U = 4

Step 7
Now you have 3 possibilities for SUN (105, 127 and 149). It is easy enough to multiply them by 6
and see which one results in the right possibility.

Step 8
105 × 6 = 630
127 × 6 = 762
149 × 6 = 894

Step 9
127 × 6 = 762 is not correct, since last digit of SUN should not be same as first digit of BRU.

Step 10
149 × 6 = 894 is also not correct, since last digit of SUN should not be same as middle digit of
BRU.

Step 11
Therefore, correct value of SUN is 105.

(8) 28

Step 1

Let us consider the position of Michael. He is standing at the 13 th position from the left. After
interchanging positions with Ronald, he becomes 18th from the left.

Step 2

The new position of Michael is also the 11 th position from the right (It is the same position where
Ronald was standing earlier i.e. the 11th position from the right).

Step 3

Michael is 18 th from the left, which means there are 17 cadets to his left. He is also 11 th from the
right, which means there are 10 cadets to his right.

Step 4
Therefore, the number of cadets in the row is 17 (left) + 10 (right) + 1 (Michael) = 28 cadets.

Step 1
We are given the following letters:
CDQUFWZO
We are asked to find the fraction of letters from these letters that can not be drawn using only
straight lines.

Step 2
Let us count the total number of letters given to us. It is 8.

Step 3
We can see that out of the given 8 letters, only the following 5 letters can not be drawn using only
straight lines:
CDOQU
All 5 of these letters have curves.

Step 4
Fraction of the letters that can not be drawn using only straight lines =

(10) $450

Step 1
The price of the article = $1200
Since the article is sold at 25% discount, the discounted price of the article = Price of the article -
discount on the article
25
= 1200 - 1200 ×
100
30000
= 1200 -
100
= 1200 - 300
= $900

Step 2
Since due to off-season, the shopkeeper provides an additional discount of 50% on the discounted
price,
the selling price of the article = discounted price of the article - additional discount on the
discounted price
50
= 900 - 900 ×
100
45000
= 900 -
100
= 900 - 450
= $450

Step 3
Therefore, the selling price of the article = $450

Step 1
Elizabeth is taller than Deborah, this means Elizabeth is taller than someone.

Step 2
Elizabeth is not as tall as Patricia, which means Patricia is also taller than someone.

Step 3
Nancy is taller than Richard, this means Nancy is also taller than someone.

Step 4
Nancy is shorter than Deborah, this means Deborah is also taller than someone.

Step 5
The only one left who is not taller than anyone is Richard.

(13) c.

Step 1
If we look at a cube from the top, we observe that a cube has 4 continuous faces, i.e. 1, 2, 3 and
4, and two side faces i.e. 5 and 6.

Step 2
On observing the given options, we see that option c. has four squares along the column that will
cover the continuous four faces of the cube, and two squares on either side of the column that will
cover the two side squares.

Step 3
Hence, the figure given in option c. can be used to completely cover the cube if we fold along the
lines.

(14) b. P = 2 × (24 + 16)

Step 1
We know that the perimeter of a rectangle is equal to the sum of all sides.

Step 2
Also, the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal. Hence, we have the sides of the given rectangle
as 24 cm, 24 cm, 16 cm and 16 cm.

Step 3
So, Perimeter = sum of sides = 24 cm + 24 cm + 16 cm + 16 cm
= 2 × 24 + 2 × 16
= 2 × (24 + 16)
Perimeter = 2 × (24 cm + 16 cm).

Step 4
So, option b. is the correct answer.

(15) 6

Step 1
Firstly, let us count the number of digits in the given whole number 900000.

Step 2
If we begin to count the digits, starting from the left, we find that there are, a total of, 5 zeros
appearing after the digit 9.

Step 3
Hence, there could be 900000 6-digit whole numbers in the number system. Before we can
conclusively say so, we will need to verify it.

Step 4
In order to prove that there are 900000 6-digit whole numbers in the number system, let us
subtract the smallest 6-digit number from the largest 6-digit number and add 1 to the calculated
difference.
(999999 - 100000) + 1
= 899999 + 1
= 900000

Step 5
Hence, We find that there are 900000 6-digit whole numbers in the entire number system.
