BRIDGET JONES`S DIARY BY HELEN FIELDING

Helen Fielding
Helen Fielding was born February 19th 1958 in West Yorkshire, England. With the
novel Bridget Jones’s Diary, Helen Fielding created not only one of the bestselling
books of the 1990’s, she also created a whole new genre of “chick lit”.

Helen Fielding began her career as at the BBC in 1979, on a news magazine. It was
this work that leads her to a refugee camp in Eastern Sudan in 1989 where her
experiences there made the foundation of her first novel Cause Celeb. The novel
received great reviews but only limited sales.
In the 1990’s Helen Fielding worked as a journalist and columnist for different
newspapers including Sunday times, Independent and The telegraph. Bridget
Jones’s Diary began as a column she wrote anonymous for The Independent in
1995. The column was only a way to finance another novel about cultural
differences in the Caribbean, but when the people started praising the column
she put her own name to the Diaries.
Helen Fielding has two children with The Simpsons writer/executive producer
Kevin Curran, Dash born in February 2004 and Romy born in July 2006. However
they split up in 2009. She has three siblings, Jane, David and Richard and her
mother Nellie still lives in Yorkshire and her father died in 1982

THEME AND IDEA OF THE NOVEL:

Theme: the novel is about a single woman who is worried about her private life,
weight and bad habits as she like alcohol, cigarettes and junk food! All events that
take place in her life Brigdet notes in he diary.
Idea: it is a story where all women can find out herself. Also it is a guide book for
those who want to know how to deal with popular women`s problems.

Plot of the story:

The novel revolves around thirty year old Bridget Jones, whose life revolves
around trying to lose weight and finding love. Bridget decided to change her life
around for the new year by vowing to lose weight, improve her career, stop
smoking, and finally find a boyfriend.
Bridget is infatuated with her boss, Daniel Cleaver, and begins a flirtation with
him. At the same time, her parents are attempting to involve her in a relationship
with the recently-divorced family friend, Mark Darcy. Bridget’s relationship with
Daniel is limited by the fact that they date only sometimes. Bridget also bumps
into Mark Darcy and makes a fool of herself.
Bridget’s parents are going through their own problems, and eventually her
mother runs away with a younger man, Julio. Yet Bridget’s relationship with
Daniel improves and they begin to spend more time together. One day Bridget
decided to surprise him at his house and finds a naked woman, thus realizing that
he is still seeing other women.
Bridget resolves that it is time to move on and think about her career instead, so
she gets a job in television. Mark Darcy helps her secure a highly exclusive
interview, which further builds up her reputation.
Mark asks Bridget on a date, but unintentionally both stand each other up. They
then decide to have dinner at Bridget’s house, but she ends up being unable to
cook anything edible.
Later, Bridget learns that her mother’s boyfriend Julio scammed her family
friends, including Mark’s parents, out of their money. Mark flies to Portugal to
recover the money but only some is located.
Mark does not make contact with Bridget and she decides that he is no longer
interested. On Christmas, however, Mark Darcy manages to find Julio and get him
arrested, then professes his love for Bridget.

Main characters:
1. Bridget Jones is the protagonist of the book.
2. Mark Darcy is a highly-qualified lawyer. He is Bridget`s friend since
childhood. Their meetings happen every now and then, and some feelings
emerge.
3. Jude is one of the best Bridget's friends. She shares answers for life
problems with Bridget.
4. Tom, Bridget`s best friend , is the other member of a "family.” His advice
always helps the author of the diary not to make a mistake.
5. Sharon, or Shazzer, a single woman, is a feminist . Also Bridget`s friend.
Sharon's comments and advice are a bit rude, but at the same time helpful.
6. Mrs. Jones is Bridget's mother who after thirty-five years of marriage
understood that she had wasted her life being a slave for her family.
7. Daniel Cleaver is Bridget`s boss. He made Bridget interested to him but
then she recognized that Daniel had another woman.
8. Magda and Jeremy are spouses, good Bridget`s friends.
9. Mr Jones is Bridget`s dad. He is trying to survive the divorce.
10. Una and Geoffrey Alconbury are spouses, Bridget`s parents friends.
And others …..

My favorite character is ,of course, Bridget Jones. She is a woman who tries to
change herself to be the best version of herself. She never gives up, even when
smth bad or shameful happens. Bridget shows how to deal with real women`s
problems and how to resolve it.
I really adore all episodes of this book cause every chapter is full of exciting
moment. Besides, one of the funniest part is about Bridget`s preparation for her
birthday. At first, she planned to celebrate at home with some friends and cook
delicious dishes, however, everything went wrong. First of all she went to the
shop three times because she forgot to buy smth from her list. Secondly, Bridget
failed all dishes she wanted to serve. Thirdly, she didn`t have time to do make up
and dry her hair. Fortunately, her friends guessed that Bridget failed all, so they
have reserved restaurant earlier and made a surprise for her.

So, I recommend all to read this book if you want to laugh, relax and brighten up
your gloomy days.
