This massive, undisciplined, and yet welcome anthology feels like the project of an enthusiast who has managed to infect his publisher with his overriding
passion without much fussing about editorial rigor. There's an indiscriminate feel to poet and professor Tobin's selection process, which, despite the book's
implicit promise of a broad survey of Irish American poetry over three centuries, is heavily weighted toward the last several decades. And Tobin thrashes
about in his rambling introduction in search of the book's rationale--Does Irish American poetry have a shared sensibility or even common themes?--
without coherent results. (Is Marianne Moore an Irish American poet? A. R. Ammons?) But if the purpose of a good poetry anthology is to introduce readers

4 star 100% I love the idea of this anthology...it takes up an area in Irish studies and poetry that hitherto has
3 star 0% been neglected...the Irish-American experience...Irish-American poetry and poetics...the editor has
2 star 0% made interesting inclusive selections here (Frank O'Hara, Gwendolyn Brooks, Marianne Moore) but
1 star 0% other inclusions are a tad questionable...Do we in fact consider Derek Mahon, Eavan Boland,
Eamonn Grennan, Robinson Jeffers, or Wallace Stevens to be Irish-American poets? Or Brian
How does Amazon calculate star ratings? Coffey? Denis Devlin? Then why not Paul Muldoon? His work isn't included. What makes Billy
Collins an Irish-American poet? Or Czeslaw Milosz?? Why isn't Seamus Heaney included? He taught
at Berkeley and Harvard... The anthology needs a clear introduction essay that addresses editorial
decisions and selections, and it needs short biographical headnotes or endnotes that make explicit
